cupcake_goth: A lady always carries a handkerchief. (dainty cliche)

Today was busy. In addition to brunch with fabulous people, today was the big supply run for Mourning Market items. Blick art supplies, two thrift stores, Marshall's, Michael's ... I'm sure I'm forgetting somewhere.

Anyhoodle, I now have 8 pairs of blanks to make Cranky!Bloomers!! I have teacups to paint! I have books to make roses from! But it was a lot of running around, and now I am going to fall over. And watch episodes of True Blood with the Infamous BlueJay and Heather, because that's how we decompress around here.

Wheeee, second MCR show! I didn't have anywhere as clear of a view of the stage (Showbox SoDo is notorious for this), but the energy was just as high, and the sound quality was slightly better.

Helena was wrenching. Cancer hit me even harder than it did on Friday night. But the final song of the night? VAMPIRES WILL NEVER HURT YOU. So I have now seen them perform it twice, and am incredibly happy about it.

Two pictures:

The Stroppy One very kindly wrote this on my arm for me, before I left the house.

What I wore, including my new leather motorcycle jacket, which I found at Buffalo Exchange today, for $15. Mmmm, Deathrock Victorian, let me do more with it.

Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cass404, [livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre, and the Infamous BlueJay, for being my concert-going companions. And extra-special thanks to the Infamous BlueJay for deciding I needed an Apocalypse Mouse shirt from the tour.

Tomorrow, if all goes well, a new GCS lesson will be posted.

The thrifting Powers That Be withheld their favor today. Okay, sure, I found a pair of pinstriped PVC trousers from Lip Service, and two tea cups with heart-shaped saucers, but did I find an ivory wedding dress at a reasonable price? Oh no, I did not. If I had realized LAST WEEKEND that I needed one, I probably would have found one. Hmmph.

I wonder if I can sweet-talk [livejournal.com profile] maiaarts or my Dad into running to St. Vinnie's tomorrow? Is it worth it? Or should I just bite the bullet and make a long, vaguely Victorian-ish skirt from the bits and bobs of ivory fabric I have around. Questions, questions.

(But still no photos. I'll try and take some tonight, but I plan to be busy writing and doing a sewing project.)

Today, the ever-delightful [livejournal.com profile] celadon_noise (hubby of [livejournal.com profile] maiaarts, and the musical genius behind the "Dark Decorum", the music that is used in the Gothic Charm School videos) took me thrift shopping. He goes thrifting like I do: quickly. Sure, I can bimble around a thrift store and take ages, but my preferred method is a brisk pace, and seeing what jumps out at me.

(Yes, that's how I found the Fluevogs yesterday.)

Anyhoodle, we hit ::stops to count:: four thrift stores; three Goodwills, one Value Village. The loot, in list form: )

Aaaaaand, I may have figured out the solution to my need an ivory top hat dilemma! I will take one of my black top hats that is the right shape, and cover it with ivory lace. (As in, cut out and fit pieces, then tack them down with matching thread. Fiddly, yes, but something I can probably do in an evening while watching silly movies.)
You people with your "pix or it didn't happen!" Sheesh. Anyway, I will take a photo of the rest of the Goodwill loot later on - I have to start getting ready to go hit some more thrift stores with [livejournal.com profile] maiaarts' hubby. Thrift Store Powers That Be, I beseech you to help me find good stuff!

But here are the Fluevogs. UK size 3, so a US size 5, I think?

Over the past few days of browsing stores with Halloween merchandise, I have only purchased THREE items.

- Skull-decorated cupcake liners.

- Wilson's black gel color for frosting.

- Two oven mitts with glow-in-the-dark skeleton hands on them.

Okay, I have not yet been to Michael's or a big JoAnn's. But still! Marvel at my restraint and willpower so far!

More proof I am a grown-up: I finally made the appointment for my follow-up mammogram. Which I had kind of been dragging my feet on, and YES, I know that such things are important and should not be delayed. I KNOW. My appointment is tomorrow.

Of course, possibly negating any claim I have to adulthood: I stopped by the darling neighborhood thrift store (that is entirely staffed by sweet little old ladies), and discovered a brand-new, miniature version of one of the Gund bears I collect. I, erm, may have squeaked and bounced up and down. And then walked home with my parasol and a bear tucked under my arm. What? Now the Murphy Bear Clan has a new brother. I just need to figure out what his name is. (The other four bears are Murphy (who was the first), Dearby, Thirby, and Bigby. See this post for a longer explanation about Murphybear and why he's so important to me.)
The Value Village in Edmonds (21558 Highway 99), as of today, had a bunch of interesting black cotton blouses (that were not quite Victorian-ish enough for me, but would be perfect for dressier corpgoth wear), some cute lace dresses (very 30s looking), and a vintage parasol with a black canopy in perfect condition. Yes, I passed over the parasol, because I realized my parasol collection is ... well, I don't really need another, and if I DO decide I need a new parasol in my life, I'm saving my pennies and buying the Signature Bella in b&w.

Now, back to writing and chores. (One of which is now "stain removal on the vintage pink & white satin, giant poof skirted 80s prom dress".) That will be transformed into a lovely ruffled skirt for me, oh yes.
The Ballard Goodwill has, in the "Fashion Forward" section, a long leather (or it may be heavy vegi leather, I'm not sure) Tripp skirt for $20. It looked brand new, and had many buckles, snaps, and chains. I considered purchasing it and selling it on to someone, but decided to leave it there for some lucky gothling to find.

(The same store had a FANTASTIC pair of dusty rose & black granny boots. That were, alas, perched on 4" stiletto heels. Dammit.)

I just got done dismantling a dark purple cotton velveteen duvet cover, which I purchased a few months ago at the Goodwill outlet for under $15. Next I need to pin and cut out pattern pieces. Then there's a dye bath, and eventually it will become a black velvety, ruffly skirt. Yes, I make skirts from duvet covers and sheets. Thrift stores are wonderful.

[livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre is a queen among women*, for today she provided me with fun conversation, thrift store shopping, and cupcakes. And while at one of the thrift stores, she found a Revenge-era MCR shirt for me. (Yes, I'm wearing it around the house right now, with a long velvet skirt. Isn't that what everyone's "inside clothes" look like?)

The thrift stores also produced a stack of vintage trashy gothic romances (look, any book that includes the line "and a forced marriage in the family crypt!" is one I MUST READ), a black blouse with silver pinstripes (which is the wrong size, but is an exact duplicate of a blouse I have, which means I can use today's find as a source of fabric to add matching ruffles to the previous blouse), a pretty box to store some stuff in, and b&w striped cotton sheets (which will eventually turn into bloomers and maybe a skirt). (And a black blazer to alter and a skully t-shirt, but those aren't quite as exciting as the other stuff.)

Tomorrow I get to experiment with this whole "morning" thing again, as I have to be at the office of my contract agency at 8AM for orientation. This is going to be interesting. Will a full dose of Ambien knock me out at 10PM tonight? Or will I just have wacky hallucinations? Let's find out!

*A queen among women EVEN IF she has left me with an earworm I never thought I'd suffer. But apparently "Womanizer" by Britney Spears is freakishly catchy.
Yesterday, I went for a couple of walks, had delicious ice cream with a shot of espresso over it, browsed a local thrift store* but escaped without purchasing any clothing, and started taking photos of the clothing I'm planning on selling**.

Today involves coloring my hair, seeing [livejournal.com profile] caliban1227 for a little bit, hanging out with BlueJay this evening, WORKING ON THE NEXT GOTHIC CHARM SCHOOL POST NO REALLY I MEAN IT, and job hunting. Man, I am so sick of job hunting. Part of today's job hunt is going to include contacting Volt; while I'd rather find something full-time, I would not say no to a contract position.

I must finish my tea, and then walk away from teh interwebs so I can go apply hair dye. No applying hair dye near the laptop, no. A bad idea, that.

*Attention Seattle-area steampunk ladies: the Crown Hill Value Village has a bunch of jackets, waistcoats, and boots that would work for steampunk, all in colors I won't wear. (As in, not black or pink.)

**I spent an hour and a half taking photos and writing down measurements, and there's still a large-ish pile waiting to be photographed. To say nothing of the shoes. And YES, I am going to be selling the bat shoes.
This week has been one long case of sleep deprivation. Which means I've kind of been in a "can't brain" state all week, and wow is that not helpful for getting writing done. At least now that the weather has decided to just go ahead and rain, I no longer want to drill holes in my head to see if that would help with the sinus headaches.

---

Good grief, the next handful of weeks are busy! This weekend, [livejournal.com profile] pix_kristin is visiting, yay! Next weekend, it's [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage's birthday! The weekend after that, the Vampire Ball in PDX! Then there's the Jill Tracy CD release party on April 1st (which [livejournal.com profile] tolkiencub is kindly escorting me to. On his birthday. This is one of the many reasons why he is the best stunt husband ever.), and then April 8 & 9 is another trip to PDX to see TWO MCR shows in a row. (Yes, I'm going to both. You can roll your eyes at me all you want, I don't care. Wheeeee!)

Along with all of that is a lot of writing I need to do, [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage working on a tight deadline, and oh, did I mention a mad scramble of stuff at work? Yeah. I may be kind of scarce for a bit.

---

One of my dreams last night was about me sitting in a meeting discussing color swatches and packaging mock-ups for a limited edition GCS line from MAC. Ha! I would love for that dream to come true (come on, you have to admit a "snarkling" lipstick would be FANTASTIC), but I'm not going to hold my breath until it does.

---

In Things I Really Should Be Aware Of news: it's a simple 5-minute bus ride to get from my office to a local thrift store. This is dangerous information for me to have.

::looks at FL:: Hey, I owe some of you email replies, don't I. I'll do those today, I swear.

It started out being a little dubious; I was supposed to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] weaselmom for brunch and then a day of thrifting. However, [livejournal.com profile] weaselmom suffered a catastrophe on Saturday evening, (send good thoughts her way, gang, because she needs 'em!), so Plans Obviously Changed.

[livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage was not thrilled with the idea of taking me thrift shopping, but he knew I had my little black & pink heart set on it, so off we went. The Crown Hill VV didn't turn up much (a dress that I need to change the neckline on, a couple of sewing patterns), and was filled with grouchy people. This did not Bode Well. Undaunted, we headed to the giant Goodwill downtown, where I found black-with-pink-piping satin pjs; a black velvet dressing gown; and a very cute (and brand new!) Victorian-esque cotton velvet jacket (from the Gap's brief flirtation with Victorian Gothic last fall; none of the ones I tried on fit properly at the time, but now? A size 12 fits, and beautifully).

That was not the best thing we found there, tho'. No, that honor goes to [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage, who wandered off into the toy section, and came back out holding a bear, which I promptly snatched out of his hands with a squeak of "Murphy!" You see, he had managed to find a bear that is an EXACT twin to one of my oldest stuffed animals. Way back in 1979, I asked Santa for a Gund bear. Santa, being a very nice guy, gave me one. Murphy the bear went just about everywhere with me for a couple of years. (And yes, those of you who can do math: I was 11, and felt no qualms about carrying around a stuffed bear. Have I introduced you to [livejournal.com profile] clovisdvlbunny? Well, then.) Murphy (and his cousin Gunderson, who joined the family at Christmas in 1980), have been with me ever since. For a while, they stayed upstairs and guarded my altar, but then decided they wanted to hang out on the couch with the tribe of stuffed monsters.

The bear that [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage found looks exactly like Murphy did, when Murphy was brand-new. This bear obviously had lived in someones collection since 1979 (the date on the tag), never being held, never being carted around by an eccentric child, never having vampire stories read to it in the middle of the night ... you get the idea.

His name is Dearby. He is currently sitting on the couch with Murphy, Gunderson, and the tribe of fuzzy monsters. He had an exciting afternoon of being taken to B&O Espresso for strawberry tart and going shopping at Pretty Parlor (where I found a new pink fluffy petticoat). For the record, I still have no qualms about wandering around while carrying a stuffed bear.

(Oh, and as a final treat to the day, [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage gave me pink roses. I am not kidding when I say it was a Very Good Day, and I hope it is the template for how this coming week will go.)
