That's the always-in-progress deathrock blazer, which has frayed/distressed edges, black pyramid studs on the pocket flaps, and deliberately uneven stitches decorating some of the seams. (All of these things drive the Infamous BlueJay mad, and she keeps offering to trim all the loose threads. Ha!)

I'm also wearing the wonderful deathrock jabot that Kambriel made for me: a wide band of fabric trimmed with chains and studs, and cascading ruffles of spiderweb lace.

The (not really a problem) with Tumblr and its never-ending stream of eye candy is that it makes me think longingly of doing things that I know aren't a good idea.

For example, I really DO understand that I don't really want to shave the sides of my head and commit to teasing my hair up every day so I have a deathhawk. I don't have the correct face shape for it, my hair is too fine-textured for it to work well, and the Stroppy One would not just make That Face, but become incoherent with dismay. But that doesn't stop me from looking at all the deathrock photos that scroll across my dashboard and go "Ooooh."

Wheeee, second MCR show! I didn't have anywhere as clear of a view of the stage (Showbox SoDo is notorious for this), but the energy was just as high, and the sound quality was slightly better.

Helena was wrenching. Cancer hit me even harder than it did on Friday night. But the final song of the night? VAMPIRES WILL NEVER HURT YOU. So I have now seen them perform it twice, and am incredibly happy about it.

Two pictures:

The Stroppy One very kindly wrote this on my arm for me, before I left the house.

What I wore, including my new leather motorcycle jacket, which I found at Buffalo Exchange today, for $15. Mmmm, Deathrock Victorian, let me do more with it.

Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cass404, [livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre, and the Infamous BlueJay, for being my concert-going companions. And extra-special thanks to the Infamous BlueJay for deciding I needed an Apocalypse Mouse shirt from the tour.

Tomorrow, if all goes well, a new GCS lesson will be posted.

Otherwise known as "what happens when Jilli sees things on tumblr, then realizes she has the supplies upstairs in the storage room":

(Yes, I had a spare pair of black flats AND an assortment of spikes. What?)

(Yes, I wore them to the office today. No writer is going to sass ME, I tell you what. Now if only the threat of spiky shoes would get the network to obey me.)

In other news, guess who just stapled the arm seam of her vintage blouse after it ripped? I'm just telling myself I'm oh-so-deathrock. Or something.

In other other news, Dear LJ front page, having one of your spotlight communities be one about tarantulas? With its creepy-crawly user icon? NOT OKAY, THANKS.
And where are the knock-offs, I ask you?

Pave Punk Princess Spike Bracelet on eBay (and I think they meant pavé), for a mere $329.

I'm not going to even try and be blasé here: I think that's pretty damn cute. Rhinestone spiked bracelet! Eeeee! But THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE DOLLARS for it? Oh no, not even.

(I can't find a picture of them now, but I've seen stud earrings that match the bracelet, and those are also ridiculously cute, but insanely pricey.)

So, high-end "fashion" knock-offs of punk/deathrock stuff. I'm not surprised, I just want to know where I can find cone spikes set with rhinestones so I can make my OWN accessories.
Over on Ye Olde Tumblr, I've been finding a lot of deathrock-y fashion photos. Which, of course, fills me with nostalgia and the mad urge to incorporate Olde Skool deathrock & batcave elements into my Cupcake Gothic Victorian wardrobe.

An example: hey ElderGoths! Remember when we used to all wear layers and layers of artfully shredded tights? http://gothiccharmschool.tumblr.com/post/1075695307/ill-have-you-know-it-takes-a-lot-of-work-to-get

Which got me thinking about the intersection of Olde Skool and new media, and about how the "edgier" side of the mainstream fashion industry has recently been all aflutter over deconstructed looks*. This led to some googling, and hey, look what I found:

http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/shredded-tights

Yes, a tutorial on how to artfully shred hosiery. I'll admit it, I read it, went "D'aaaaaaaw!", and then giggled. All right, and I spent part of last night attacking a pair of black stockings with some nail scissors, but I was going to be doing that ANYWAY.

It really does look like there's some sort of batcave revival going on, which just tickles me no end. Some Tumblr blogs of what I'm seeing:

http://gothfashion.tumblr.com/
http://welldressedfortheapocalypse.tumblr.com/
http://deathwaves.tumblr.com

* If you listen closely, you can hear the Stroppy One and the Infamous BlueJay grinding their teeth. They both hate deconstructed fashion with a burning intensity. I think it can be done very well, especially for photo shoots, but that usually in real life, it looks less like a fashion statement and more like someone doesn't take very good care of themselves or their clothes.
I am watching Coppola's Dracula, while meticulously shredding a pair of black pantyhose so they will look properly deathrock. While drinking absinthe.

(Mind you, I probably lose cliché points because I put a glass over a possibly dead spider, then called The Husband at his D&D game to let him know he was going to have to dispose of this. I did this after shrieking faintly at the sight of it, then praising the kitties for being Fierce Hunters, indeed.)

A slightly off-kilter photo, thanks to the Stroppy One:

Safety pins! Fluevogs! )

Posted via LiveJournal.app.

Either I'm really, really suggestible about fashion (which I don't think is the case), or I'm flouncing further into deathrock Victorian -land. Because I'm craving a motorcycle-styled jacket. Something in a mid-to-heavy-weight black cotton twill (maybe with some stretch to it), about waist-length, fitted and NOT boxy (as in, different than how all of us wore our motorcycle jackets in the 80s), and with the big lapels, snaps, and zippers.

I'd wear it over ruffly blouses and fluffy skirts, of course. And with my hair pulled up with floofy lace hair ties.

But can I find precisely what I'm looking for? Not for under $75 so far. Lip Service makes a couple of jackets that are almost exactly what I want, but are out my budget at the moment.* I think next weekend, I need to hit Ross/TJ Maxx/Goodwill, and see what I find.

*Yes, I have been muttering about having another closet culling sale. Sorting that out was obviously postponed while I was sickly.
You know what happens when you're sick? You get fidgety. So over the course of a week, I finished an accessory I'd been thinking of.

A Cupcake Goth Deathrock spiked cuff )

Two layers of black velvet ribbon, gathered pink Venise lace, spiderweb-patterned tulle, and cone spikes. (I know I'm still sickly, because setting the grommets for the ribbon ties to go through and putting the spikes on made me really tired.)

The Stroppy One thinks it might be a Bit Too Much. I, however, am delighted with it. And now, of course, I'm idly considering making a b&w striped version of it.
- Thanks for all the input about the deathrock safety pin blazer idea, folks! I spent last night with the seam ripper and safety pins, and I think the jacket turned out splendidly. I am thinking of wearing it to Mourning Market on Sunday.

- Which leads me to my next point: Seattle people! Go to Mourning Market on Sunday! 12 - 5 PM at Motor, 1950 1st Ave S. Support your local alternative craftspeople!

- Last night, while the Stroppy One was working on a project and I was putting safety pins in a blazer, we watched The Vampire's Assistant. I was very pleasantly surprised by it! A far better movie than I had expected, and my only real quibble with it is also the reason I haven't read the Circ du Freak series: ZOMG GIANT SPIDER, DO NOT WANT, THANKS. Yes, the movie version of Octa was bright red and blue and a bit cartoonish. Still moved like a damn spider, and that's a big part of my phobia right there. Let's just say there were sections of the movie where I shrieked, hid behind [livejournal.com profile] clovisdvlbunny, and waited for the Stroppy One to tell me when it was safe to look at the screen again. Hi, I'm a goth and I'm terrified of spiders.

- PSA for Aromaleigh users: the Voile and Glissade foundations are being discontinued, as are Pure Cover and Pure Rouge. Argh! I am consoling myself with the knowledge that mineral makeup doesn't ever go bad, and so have made an order to stock up on my precious Alabaster Glissade (with an extra jar of Ghost, just to be safe). And on my next Aromaleigh order, I need to stock up on the Bleeding Poppy and Skeleton Key shades from the limited edition Victoria's Revenge line.

Okay, time to finish my second pot of tea, edit some more docs, and then go play with makeup.
Sooooo, I've been looking at a lot of deathrock photos and pictures from this year's WGT over on Tumblr. Which is making me crave adding deathrock-y elements into my Victorian Cupcake Goth attire. I'm already going the route of layers of shredded tights and fishnets, but now I'm contemplating going one step further.

No, not shaving the sides of my head. Can you imagine what the Stroppy One would do? Sheesh.

I have an unlined, princess-seamed black blazer, made from stretch twill, that closes in the front with buckles instead of buttons. Notched lapels, and faux corset-lacing in the back to adjust the fit. I am thinking of taking my trusty seam ripper to the back seams, the seams where the sleeves connect to the blazer, and maybe the front seams. I'd open all of those seams up, and then "sew" them back together with safety pins. Many, many safety pins. And then wear the blazer over a high-collared, ruffly striped blouse and fluffy striped skirt. With petticoats, of course.

I can picture it clearly in my head, and *I* think it would look great. But I realize that sometimes I get these ideas, and I am ... easily blinded by the "Ooooh, shiny and new!" aspect of them. This is where you people come in!

[Poll #1576905]
Hey, sewing types! Refresh my memory: didn't Jo Ann's have a fabric last Halloween that was a stretchy knit that was pre-distressed? I could swear I've seen listings for such a thing on eBay under the name "zombie knit", but of course I can't find any now.

(I've been looking at a LOT of deathrock-y type photos lately, and I kind of want to create a deathrock-ish version of one of my usual outfits. High-collared, frilly blouse, full ruffly skirt, but with overlays of tattered and shredded fabric. Have I lost my sugar-enhanced mind? I dunno. It sounds fun to ME, anyway.)

(Heeeeeey, I think I have about 4 or 5 yards of heavy-weight fishnetty fabric upstairs in the storage room ...)

(Or I could get a lace blouse from a thrift store, distress it/melt holes in it, and wear it over a camisole. But what to do about the skirt?)

(I like parenthetical statements!)
Here, have a bunch of scattered bullet points!

- Last night's Sepiachord show featuring Unwoman, Nathanial Johnstone, and Harlan from Toy Box Trio was brilliant. And yes, is part of the reason I am coveting a theramin. (To be honest, I've idly wanted a theramin for YEARS. But now I really really want one.)

- In celebration of it being work at home Friday, I am wearing ... my new black & pink PJ pants with a Pirates of the Caribbean print. A print of pink pirate skulls, cursed Aztec gold, and compass roses. I love them. No, you don't get a photo.

- Looking at photos of various deathrockers thanks to my Tumblr stream has not only made me nostalgic for Big Hair, but has also given me a (very mild!) craving for a deathhawk. (There is no need to stage an intervention, Stroppy One. I am not shaving the sides of my head. I promise.)

- So far I've had a pot of chai (Nutty Guru from the wonderful Sip-T company (clicky-link!)) and a double Americano. I still want more caffeine. Should I wait until the Stroppy One brews coffee later on, or should I have more tea?
Another photo by the amazingly talented Libby Bulloff, from the deathrock/big hair shoot we did. I have this strange urge to start internet-window shopping for more ankh pendants ...

This has been posted in several communities, but just in case you DIDN'T see it, or didn't bother clicking through the cut-tag:

Deathrock-y Victorian-esque fabulousness. Plus a pink & black striped corset!

Some day I need someone to help me assemble a Miss Haversham from beyond the grave! style of outfit/makeup/hair. Every time I play around with it myself, the whole thing veers into Crazy Bag Lady territory.
