I just got done dismantling a dark purple cotton velveteen duvet cover, which I purchased a few months ago at the Goodwill outlet for under $15. Next I need to pin and cut out pattern pieces. Then there's a dye bath, and eventually it will become a black velvety, ruffly skirt. Yes, I make skirts from duvet covers and sheets. Thrift stores are wonderful.

Hey, some of that fabric is really pretty . . . might as well use it!

I might have left it purple, but I've been using found fabric like that for AGES. I had some truly stunning gold-and-white brocade Italian Renaissance garb that I made out of a great-aunt's living room curtains.

I cottoned onto (har, har) the idea of using thrift store sheets to make fitting muslins and flat linings a few years ago. If it's a particularly nifty sheet, such as one of the black on black Isaac Mizrahi for Target sheets, it gets to lead a loftier life as a dress or skirt. I found the most awesome set of sheets at a thrift store a couple of months ago that got to be the lining for a victorian outfit for [livejournal.com profile] trystbat. They were very kitschy-cool and absolutely adorable and absolutely her.

Sheer curtain panels are also wonderful for fitting muslins when I'm doing bridal gowns. White cotton sheet for the gown, the curtain panel is used to mock up any sheer parts. ;)

I really had to look up duvet first... Dear dear, cultural diversities can be confusing. I use to forget that using a duvet isn't necessarily customary out of Europe... <_<; If covers weren't that pricey over here using them for making clothes would be awesome. And those sold at thrift stores or flea markets aren't in the shape to be used as clothing yourself in... *cough* Though I found some really neat white damask in our attic, which I could dye and create something nifty from... *hmmm*
