Everyone, please go take a look at the LJ comm [livejournal.com profile] savesnowssanity. [livejournal.com profile] snowcoma is a delightful person who is in a horrible situation. There are all sorts of interesting things that are being auctioned off to help raise money for her medical bills; I'm offering a personalized, signed copy of the Gothic Charm School book: http://community.livejournal.com/savesnowssanity/6091.html

Thank you for any taking a look at the auctions, and for any help you can give.

The quote that best sums up my evening: "Head for the giant flamethrower, then turn right at the chainsaw-wielding clowns." We went to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights with [livejournal.com profile] pix_kristin and [livejournal.com profile] noisedesign! Many, many actors, dressed in scary costumes. With prop chainsaws.

"But Jilli!" I can hear some of you thinking, "You are notoriously easily startled and scared, even though you love the horror genre! How on earth did you deal with the packs of roaming fiends determined to terrify the guests at the park?" Good question! By deciding that hey, aren't they cute! Look at them, being all Grr! and Graaaaargh! Let's blow kisses at them! Most of the monsters seemed amused by this, and one said "You're like, a dark Mary Poppins!"

Mazes. )

There is no jaunt to the Kingdom of the Mouse on this trip; the Stroppy One is Disney-ed out right now, and I sympathize. (I mean, I am always up for a trip to Disneyland, but I understand that it is not everyone's favorite place to go.) I will miss visiting my spiritual home of the Haunted Mansion, but I'm okay with it. There will always be other trips home; maybe someday they'll give me my rental agreement when I ask for it.

I am a gothy princess. I will not even try to deny this. But there is something SO SATISFYING and FUN about the process of creating a Neo-Victorian zombie outfit. It always makes me happy.

Fun with ripping, corn syrup, and food coloring! And cocoa powder! )

Note to Self: You will need to find a new white blouse for vampire dress-up. That blouse is now very much the blouse for zombie dress-up. Yes, there is a difference.
We went and saw Zombieland this afternoon. Wheeee! I loved it. I now have "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica stuck in my head, and I want a Twinkie. A note for the squeamish: this is a gory, blood-spattered movie. If you don't do well with gore, you might want to give this one a miss. I, on the other hand, cannot wait until I can own my own copy of it.

Clicky-links!

If you wander over to the blog of Miss K of Aromaleigh, you can read all about how you can donate to a worthy cause AND get eye shadow custom-made for you. I think it's a great cause AND a tempting incentive. (I chose the school asking for books as my donation recipient, because books! Everyone needs books!)

The Victorian Dress-Up Doll for the novel Soulless! I love these sorts of online paper dolls (okay, I love paper dolls in general), and the fact that it's for one of my favorite new books is a bonus. (I'm also a smidge envious and coveting, because it's been a long-cherished dream of mine to eventually do some sort of Gothic Charm School paper doll thing. Someday, someday ...)

The Raven skirt from MorriganNYC. I covet this skirt SO MUCH. I'm waiting to hear back from them to find out if they have any of the black with silver print left in stock. I need to find someone who is capable of doing finely-detailed screen printing and talk over some ideas with them. But until I do, I'm going to be keeping a close eye on the offerings from MorriganNYC, yes indeed.

Braaaaaaiiins Braaaaaaiiins
From Zombie Walk 2009

As you can see, my hair did NOT stay as enormous as I had originally made it. Dammit, I knew I should have bought a can of AquaNet.

The Zombie Walk was a huge amount of fun. I was ruefully amused that apparently even when I try to make myself look like the menacing and shambling undead, the typical comment said to me is "Awww, cute!" Oh well, I have accepted my cartoon-like nature.
Dear Self,

Where did you hide the stage blood? It is necessary for tomorrow's Zombie Walk outfit.

Back to rummaging through drawers, yes indeed.

EDITED TO ADD: Found it! In the drawer with the makeup brushes. I don't remember putting it there, but okay. Also, deliberately and artfully destroying clothing for a zombie outfit = strangely soothing.
Yeah. Today I altered a blouse, made two skirts, altered a jacket, and overdyed a blazer that was an extremely greenish black but is now a true black.

I need a good source for lightweight black & white striped blouse-weight fabric, preferably cotton. I also need to get some more skirt-weight black cotton blend.

---

I also need to figure out if I'm going to be able to attend the Zombie Walk on Friday evening. I want to, I just need to poke at the logistics.

---

So I guess next week the real job hunting starts. Whee, I'm thrilled. Anyone need a good technical editor?
You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:

1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

* Weapon can be real or fictional; you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.

1. Pulse rifle. Just like in my stress nightmares, when I'm trying to fight off an invasion of the critters from the Aliens movies.

2. I can't decide between "This Corrosion" by the Sisters of Mercy, or "Thank You For The Venom" by My Chemical Romance.

3. Ripley from the Aliens movies. If I have to fight swarms of Horrible Things, I want Ripley on my side, thankyouverymuch.

(Hey, look at that! I already had a tag for "zombies", hee!)

So apparently my weeks of recurring zombie nightmares weren't just free-floating anxiety. Being proved right in this case doesn't make me happy, for the record.

I was able to get through to The Husband; he's bundled the cats, some supplies, and Clovis into the car, and is on his way here to my office. As much as I don't want to admit it, holing up at the corporate campus will be safer than being at our house. I haven't been able to contact anyone else.

So far, there's a thin veneer of normalcy at the office; even the cafeteria is still open and busy. People are trying to act like everything is fine. There have been no sightings of the infected here on campus, but it'll only be a matter of time.

You people must have seen the news reports; while the media is being very careful not to use the "Z" word, it's obvious that's what's going on. Find someplace secure. If you have to travel and you have access to the Web, try to find a route that avoids cemeteries and hospitals. If you're attacked, aim for the head. And try not to panic.

I'm going to go find some more things I can turn into weapons. If something happens, I'll try to post an update.
