I swear to god, every other year for the Vampire Masquerade ball I decide the vision for my outfit isn't working and end up changing what I'm doing roughly four weeks before the event. This time I am hedging my bets and ordered this coat in both black and white. The white version has already arrived, and I'm incredibly impressed with it. It;'s good quality fabric and construction; the only downsides are plastic buttons (which I knew I would be changing) and no pockets (which the Madwoman in the Attic will fix.)
- All black with touches of pink. (jabot, hat w/ pink feathers and roses)
I feel confident either way. I'd really like to do the white outfit, because not only will it stand out, but it'll be a nice nod to the Mardi Gras outfits that Louis, Lestat, and Claudia wore in the final episode of season 1.
---
I need to go back through my VMB entries here and see if I can find out when I started emceeing the event. I know it was after 2011, but the exact year? No idea.
My new outfit visions:
- All white with touches of red (lace jabot, red beaded "blood" on the cuffs of the sleeves, headdress with red roses and flowers)
OR- All black with touches of pink. (jabot, hat w/ pink feathers and roses)

(Look, I told you I was going to be wittering about this.)
The two options I'm currently considering:
1. Pick a shade of fuchsia/black shot silk, bribe the Infamous BlueJay to make a polonaise, then adorn it with sequined appliques. The potential drawbacks:
(The Vespertine outfit is almost certainly going to be the blue silk and jet beaded reproduction Victorian jacket that J. Peterman made almost 20 years ago, because I've hung on to it for that long, by G-D I'm going to wear it again.)

- Jay having time and workspace to make it.
- Can I find a sequined lace in the same color family as whatever silk I choose to make the appliques from? Or will I need to go with black ones?
- It's currently about 2.5" too small, and while I'd like to think I will shrink down that much in a year, I don't want to trigger the return of my Body Image Demons. I'd be able to work around this by adding a black velvet waistcoat inset to the front (like this) and add black sequined appliques to that, too.

Let's see, where were we ... last week, I returned from Disneyland (yes, I miss the Haunted Mansion, thank you for asking), worked two days, and then hopped on a bus to Portland for the Vampire Ball.

What these photos don't really show: the almost entire can of glitter hairspray that I covered myself with. Every Halloween season, Value Village/Savers stocks glitter hairspray that is not really hairspray, but is microglitter in an aerosol. It is AMAZING. It is also insidious; I suspect I'm never going to get all the glitter out of that dress, which is fine with me, but The Husband will make That Face about it.
The event was lovely; in fact, it was one of the better VMBs of the past few years. There were a wide range of performers, and the new layout of the Melody Ballroom was wonderful. While I missed the previous stage (which has been removed in the remodel), having the stage directly opposite the doors to the main ballroom was great.
Rhias came down for the event -- her first ever time at VMB! -- and had a great time. She looked fantastic, and the headpiece she made was epic.

---
Sunday morning, before I wandered off to the bus home, I indulged in a stuffed waffle at the hotel restaurant. (Stuffed with Brie and ham, and topped with pear compote.) It was delicious. I am paying for it now. I know part of what I'm feeling is exhaustion -- it's been a busy couple of weeks! -- but the upswing in brain fog and joint pain? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's due to the whacking great block of carbs & gluten I had. I guess I know for sure now that I can't eat like that anymore? Ugh, send coffee and laudanum.

I am. If I post more, other people will post more? Or something.
ANYway, last night I did a bunch of prep work on the lace collar/breastplate thing that I plan on wearing as part of my Vampire Ball outfit, including the vintage sequinned collar that Thea found for me at a yard sale. All of that looks great, and I'll sew everything down tonight.
However (and you totally knew there was a caveat, didn't you?), the (amazing! wonderful!) resin bobcat skull that I bought is too big to work as I envisioned. It's a great piece, and Ann did a fantastic job on it. But it's too thick? Too much depth? It just doesn't look right on the lace collar/breastplate, and makes the whole thing veer into looking like a Halloween costume. A well-made Halloween costume, but. Not the aesthetic I'm going for.
So! Lots of digging through jewelry boxes later, I have a couple of pieces that may work for the focal centerpiece at the neck. I'm also going to go through Thea's stuff on Saturday, and I have a huge vintage black rhinestone brooch coming to me from eBay. If I'm really lucky, the whole thing will be finished before I leave for Bats Day.

I LEAVE FOR DISNEYLAND IN ONE WEEK. ::flails excitedly::
Huh. I should write up my packing list.
