Color me pleasantly shocked, because it is far, FAR better than I had feared. Every “zany!” moment in the trailer was apparently picked to give people the completely wrong idea about the movie, because they’re just that, brief moments. The rest of the movie is far closer in tone to Sleepy Hollow. It’s almost every paranormal Gothic Romance Novel cliche rolled into one, and covered with brooding atmosphere. In fact, it's like Tim Burton decided to pay homage to Victoria Holt novels, which fills me with glee.

The parts that made me cringe the most (aside from the fang-brushing scene) were the scenes where 70s music was being used to lighten the brooding, flee-across-the-rocks-in-the-moonlight tone of the rest of the movie. For example: spoiler, of course )

It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t the train wreck I dreaded. In fact, I felt a little sorry for the people in the theatre who were obviously expecting the movie the trailer showed them. But me? I want to go see it again, and I’m definitely going to be buying it. So, I’m not just relieved, I’m happy!

"Clovis never had any plans that involved an army of penguins with explosives."

"Clovis hasn't been chased by Batman, either."

(Yes, the Tim Burton Batman Returns is on in the background. Clovis = better super villain than The Penguin! Become a Devilbunny Minion today!)

Tim Burton to direct a 3-D stop motion Addams Family movie. (clicky-link!)

I ... wow, I am conflicted about this. On the one hand, I LOVE the Addams Family. (No surprise there.) And Tim Burton is one of my favorite visual stylists/directors.

On the other hand, I was disappointed with Alice In Wonderland. Very disappointed. And really, I can't imagine anything ever being better than the two Addams Family movies with Angelica Huston and Raul Julia. (Tho' if the Addams Family musical goes on tour and comes to Seattle, OF COURSE I am going to see it. No question.)
Let me start this out by saying that Alice In Wonderland is one of my favorite books. I accumulate/collect copies of it and Through The Looking Glass, and they were some of the first books I downloaded to my iPhone. (Those, Dracula, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. I am nothing if not consistent.) Also, I am a huge fan of Tim Burton's visual aesthetic. It very closely matches my own. Not to mention that Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies, and always will be.

With those statements out of the way: I ... don't have high hopes for the Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland. Oh, it will be full of eye candy. Of that I have NO doubt. But you see, yesterday's post brought my copy of the Visual Companion for the movie (which is a fancy name for a storybook with pictures from the movie), and, well. The story is pretty much what I expected, the usual sort of "save the kingdom/overthrow the wicked queen" thing, but with an overlay of Wonderland and Tim Burton.

(Also, a short digression about editing. RUNNING SPELL CHECK DOES NOT SUBSTITUTE FOR EDITING. Because I doubt that the "grizzly" moat around the Red Queen's castle is full of bears, and I also doubt that the White Rabbit is "always ringing his ears" as if they were bells. I'm fairly sure that the Disney company can afford editors, and my goodness, they really should have. The Visual Companion book is full of such EditingFail.)

Will I go see the movie? Of course! Don't be silly. I will almost certainly end up purchasing it on Blu-Ray, too. But it won't be for the sake of the story the movie is telling.

In Shallow Fashion Details news, I am wearing a headband with a bow today. I am trying to decide if I like it. (The Stroppy One does not particularly like it.) There probably will be a picture later, and you folks can tell me what you think of it.

It just dawned on me what the next movie Tim Burton directs should be. After Dark Shadows, I mean.

He should do his own version of Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Think about it! A mysterious carnival! An older dad (so Mr. Burton can air his seemingly ever-present issues about fathers)! An idyllic, idealized vision of boyhood in a small normal town! A MYSTERIOUS CARNIVAL! An entire soundtrack full of creepy carnival music for Danny Elfman to run amok with!

C'mon, you know I'm right.

(I was thinking about the fact that Burton is directing Alice In Wonderland, which is one of my favorite books, and is going to be doing a vampire movie, which is one of my favorite fiction genres/tropes/monsters. In my head it went something like "He's obviously picking movies for me, so now that he's tackled two of my favorite things, what should be next? Oh right, one of my other all-time favorite books!")

(Also, I am well-aware that his upcoming Alice In Wonderland movie isn't a faithful adaptation of the book. I'm still looking forward to it.)
