Thanks to a kind friend, I received an advance copy of the new novel Dracula - The Undead. It is being promoted as the "official" sequel to the original novel, and was co-written by a Dracula scholar and a descendant of Bram Stoker.

I finished it last night. I am planning on writing a rather lengthy, spoiler-filled post about it later on today, once my eyes stop rolling so hard that it makes typing difficult.

For the moment, I am going to ignore my huge stack of new books waiting to be read, and instead take comfort in the pages of Anno Dracula by Kim Newman.

I tend to be more of a tea drinker. I like tea, plus tea pots! Pretty tea cups! Mad tea parties! So, y'know, there's this whole bonus whimsical thing tea has going for it. But lately, I have been craving coffee. Don't get me wrong, I still have my pot of tea in the mornings, but I've also been having a double-tall americano in addition to that. My guess is I've been craving coffee because of, oh, my insomnia being worse and the ongoing sense of (mostly good) overwhelmed-ness I've been dealing with. But whatever the reason, I've been drinking more coffee.

(Dear Self, remember to call and set up the consultation for the sleep study your doc wants you to go on. With love and mild exasperation, Your Memory.)

Boots! It is all the fault of [livejournal.com profile] maiaarts that I am coveting a pair of Dr. Martins for the first time in a couple of decades. But, really, how could I resist the notion of 14-eye docs with leg and foot bones on them? (clicky-link!) Seriously, look at them! They would be absolutely charming with pink ribbons for laces, worn with fluffy skirts and little fitted jackets. I really REALLY want them. Like, put them on my wish list, am poking at my budget want them.

Speaking of boots, if any of you are contemplating purchasing the JUMP Sparky boots (clicky-link!), be aware that the calves are snug. They fit me, and have stretched out a bit to now zip up easily, but they are tighter through the calves than the JUMP Bjork boots.

(Also, check Ebay for them. That's where I got mine, for considerably less than Amazon is charging.)

Skelly-foot boots ... skelly-foot boots ...

Coming soon to this LJ! A review of [livejournal.com profile] mirandaluna's book In The Blood. But the short version of the review is: it made me overwhelmingly nostalgic for the 90s-era Goth scene. Especially for the 90s-era Goth scene that didn't quite exist, but that we all assumed must exist in other cities that were cooler than the ones we lived in.

Here's hoping a second pot of black tea will help me wake up, because I've got a bunch of stuff I need to do today. I've also been struck with an OVERWHELMING craving for a chocolate chip cookie. If I still am longing for one later on, I suspect my afternoon walk will take me down the hill to the little bakery, where I will hopefully find chocolate chip cookies.

I need to finish re-reading my beloved Vampire Kisses series, because [livejournal.com profile] ailleann23 is a darling and agreed to go to the June 28th signing for the next book, which means I need to mail my books to her. (Plus a stack of GCS cards, because why not?) Oh hey, didn't I mean to write up some thoughts about why the Vampire Kisses series is far, FAR superior to the Twilight books? That's right, I did! Be warned, there are vague sorts of spoilers underneath this cut tag. )

The Vampire Kisses series is one of my favorite series of vampire novels; not just for YA books, but in general. When people ask me for recommendations, this is the series I will geeble on about.

Okay, more tea and editing. Whee.
I've been back at work since Monday. I still am obviously not back at full health, because my goodness do I get tired easily. But I'm back to my usual routines, and was well enough to go to Stitch & Bitch on Monday night. Seeing people, yay!

---

I've been receiving a LOT of mail about the latest GCS column, all of which has been complimentary so far. I won't lie: I was very nervous writing that column. But I couldn't ignore the various letters I had been seen from readers about self-harm and self-injury. I am probably going to do a follow-up post with links to resources such as communities and discussion boards that various people have recommended to me.

It should be no secret to anyone that I read assorted fanfic, right? I'm a fan of stories, and there are a lot of good ones to be found in fanfic. I will admit, I'm still very waffly about RPF (Real Person Fic). On the one hand, making up stories about real people's public personae makes sense to me. On the other hand, there are all sorts of issues with privacy and boundaries that I feel very strongly about, especially when they concern public figures I admire. But I have friends who I trust to make recommendations, which means that when someone finds really well-done gen vampire AU MCR fic, I get to cackle delightedly and have a new thing to read.

Speaking of reading, I just got Eccentric Glamour: Creating An Insanely More Fabulous You by Simon Doonan, and I want him to become my fabulous and zany uncle. Why? This quote from the book explains it all:

"First, evolving your own brand of eccentric glamour is good for your psyche. Knowing who you really are and dressing the part - with an air of amused recklessness - is life affirming for you and life enhancing for other people." Look, one of my core philosophies, explained by someone else! Know who you are, be happy with who you are, and stop worrying about what the mythical Everyone Else thinks!

---

Tangentially speaking of my various core philosophies, the writing is ... going. Not as briskly as I would like, but I AM making progress. So, yay.

And now, because I can, Shallow Fashion Details!

So. Stuff and things. How have you people been?
