I've been back at work since Monday. I still am obviously not back at full health, because my goodness do I get tired easily. But I'm back to my usual routines, and was well enough to go to Stitch & Bitch on Monday night. Seeing people, yay!

I've been receiving a LOT of mail about the latest GCS column, all of which has been complimentary so far. I won't lie: I was very nervous writing that column. But I couldn't ignore the various letters I had been seen from readers about self-harm and self-injury. I am probably going to do a follow-up post with links to resources such as communities and discussion boards that various people have recommended to me.

It should be no secret to anyone that I read assorted fanfic, right? I'm a fan of stories, and there are a lot of good ones to be found in fanfic. I will admit, I'm still very waffly about RPF (Real Person Fic). On the one hand, making up stories about real people's public personae makes sense to me. On the other hand, there are all sorts of issues with privacy and boundaries that I feel very strongly about, especially when they concern public figures I admire. But I have friends who I trust to make recommendations, which means that when someone finds really well-done gen vampire AU MCR fic, I get to cackle delightedly and have a new thing to read.

Speaking of reading, I just got Eccentric Glamour: Creating An Insanely More Fabulous You by Simon Doonan, and I want him to become my fabulous and zany uncle. Why? This quote from the book explains it all:

"First, evolving your own brand of eccentric glamour is good for your psyche. Knowing who you really are and dressing the part - with an air of amused recklessness - is life affirming for you and life enhancing for other people." Look, one of my core philosophies, explained by someone else! Know who you are, be happy with who you are, and stop worrying about what the mythical Everyone Else thinks!

---

Tangentially speaking of my various core philosophies, the writing is ... going. Not as briskly as I would like, but I AM making progress. So, yay.

And now, because I can, Shallow Fashion Details!

  • Black patent pointy-toe mary janes.

  • B&W stripy tights.

  • Black knee-length skirt with three tiers of ruffles at the hem, worn over petticoats.

  • B&W stripy menswear-styled shirt.

  • Black waistcoat with a notched collar, and a pink taffeta heart and bat patch sewn above the left breast.

  • Hair pulled back into a high ponytail and secured with floofy lace hairties.

  • Makeup: NYX concealer and YSL Touch Éclat under my eyes, translucent powder, MAC "pink papillion" on the outer half of my lids with MAC "sketch" smudged under the lower lashline, black liquid liner, black mascara, and NARS "scarlett empress" lipstick.

  • The usual giant rings, and a large puffy silver heart with a silver & pink crystal skull in the center worn on a pink satin bow, tied around the collar of the shirt.

So. Stuff and things. How have you people been?

I've also just read Simon Doonan's book and loved it. :) Nice to see someone else felt the same way. Forthcoming is a review on Laurelblog of Sarah Katherine Lewis' Sex & Bacon: Why I Love Things That Are Very, Very Bad For Me.

I was in B&N this weekend and I remembered you mentioning this book. So while I waiting for Magnus and Joel to get out of Iron Man, I picked it up and started reading. By the time they met me down there I had decided that it must be mine. lol

Also, I knew I had to at least look at it when I read this review (by a reader) on Amazon:
This book contains an _entirely serious_ chapter about exorcising spirits from vintage clothing.
It contains advice that it is occasionally good to dress up as Queen Elizabeth (tiaras! gloves!).
Just to be inconsistent, it also contains many good observations (why does everyone want to look like Pamela Anderson, punchline to the world?), and some perfectly good advice.
There's also many short, fashion-oriented interviews with people--like Dita von Teese--who make the world a more interesting place by dressing (as in the title) "insanely."
Fun book, but use with caution....

lol! My kind of book!

Thanks again for mentioning it in your post! ;) It's already very obvious that there needs to be more Existentialists (I believe I'm a Rive Gauche/Ghoul mix by his definitions) around....and any excuses for other people to dress up is a good thing!
