I think I just found the mini tricorn of my Cupcake Gothic pirate-y dreams!

Of course, it's TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS, so there's no way on earth I'm ever getting it. But good heavens, it's darling. Stripy! Pink! Adorned with a miniature pirate ship!

(Listen; do you hear that sound? That is the sound of [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage rolling his eyes, sighing, and possibly muttering "Walk away from the computer, Jilli".)

TWO HUNDRED TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS?

Step One: Wood, dowels, paper, string, netting, felt, block, steamer, ribbon, hat pins.

Step Two: ?

Step Three: PROFIT!

From: [identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com

Step Two: +/-Fifteen hours labour.

There's a reason I know longer make leather goods to sell, and your comment exemplifies it.

Egregiously overpriced, but pretty and a new sight, for me. It also reminds me of the expression "[She looks like] a ship in full sail."

So...have you taken a hat-making course yet? Or bought a book? When I see prices like that for materials that cost so much less, it seems like hat-making is part of your destiny.

Wow!! That is TRULY fabulous. Wow. Love. Want.

From: [identity profile] maiaarts.livejournal.com

we need to learn how to make these hats

Seriously!
As a hat addict, I think it is time to break down.
I will ask Eric if I can get all the stuff,
and if Judith can't teach me, I think Nancy's Sewing Basket has classes...

Re: we need to learn how to make these hats

I have a vague understanding of how to make them, I just haven't had the time to sit down and do some trial runs. You know me, no patience.

From: [identity profile] maudelynn.livejournal.com

we could make something like that! i could show you how! and then you could have all the hats you could ever imagine...
hmmm... wait... i think you might be able to imagine A LOT...

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Not from Topsy Turvy (tho' she does *wonderful* work, and I have one of her hats). This is from heysailor on Etsy.

For $225, the ship had better have functioning miniature artillery.

From: [identity profile] torreybird.livejournal.com

now THAT's an idea. Jilli, we could do this with cap gun rounds... Actually, how about we just mount a set of miniature cannons on a mini tricorn, perhaps through gun-holes, and have it actually FIRE? The whole hat could be the ship...

hee hee hee... I'm a helper.

GORGEOUS! I wish I was very, very wealthy. If I was, I would buy you one. And get myself one in purple.

::Pirate-Gasm::

That is gorgeous. It does seem pricey though.

I was looking at this very same hat today as I attempted to avoid doing some evil chore. Several thoughts entered my mind:

1. It reminded me, at once, of you.

2. It would look truly lovely on you.

3. It is sadly expensive.

4. I would love to have one as well.

At least it doesn't cost anything to gaze longingly or dream wistfully.

From: [identity profile] stroppy-baggage.livejournal.com

...

Nope, I don't have a comeback that can match the horror of that image. Bastard.

I dunno - I think it's worth that price. I mean, I'd pay that much for a corset, so why not a hat?

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

I'd get more use out of a corset. Which is not to say that I think the hat ISN'T worth the price they're asking: I know enough about millinery to know how much time and work was involved in making it. I just can't justify spending $225 on a hat.

From: [identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com

I find that all I can think is "How the hell do you store that?"

From: [identity profile] chrisrnps.livejournal.com

Combination hat-box / miniature drydock sold separately.

From: [identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com

OH, my God. That is the best hat in the world.

From: [identity profile] stroppy-baggage.livejournal.com

I'm surprised by the number of people who think it's expensive. It looks like a lot of work went into the hat, and $225 is a reasonable price for the work-hours it would have taken. Of course, the quality of the stitching cannot be judged from that photo so who knows...

Still not buying it, tho'.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

So, if I saved up my pennies and bought it, you won't disown me?

Holy crap! Lions!
Let's put tall ships on hats! We can wear them to tea to celebrate the glorious armada, how could himself be opposed to that?

From: [identity profile] dichroic.livejournal.com

I don't think it's overpriced at all. You're not paying for materials; you're paying for skill, imagination, and labor. What's a skilled laborer worth? A computer programmer can make $40-$50 an hour; this also takes a igh level of skill and a much more unique imagination - and I'd bet this did take a few hours to make. I sympathize with the budget issue - whether it's worth the money is not at all the same question as whather it's worth living on ramen for a month - but I do think it's worth the money.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Oh, I don't think it's overpriced, either. The amount of time and skill that went into creating it is easily worth the price the maker is asking for it. It's just that I can't justify spending that much money on a hat I won't wear very often. I wish I could.

From: [identity profile] shipchan.livejournal.com

Very cool. I feel like you could make that fairly easily though.

From: [identity profile] robespierrette.livejournal.com

You know. . .

Just because I'm a natural enabler, I wanted to point out that the seller has several other *really* cool hats - and they are much less expensive.

I think I may need to ask her about making this number (http://www.hey-sailor.com/choccrawford.html) in a different set of colors, to go with the wonderful 18th century gown that the fabulous Marie (http://www.fittingroomcorsets.com/) is making for me. (It's gold and soft sea-green-blue. . . and needs a hat).
