Busy. Busy busy busy. Not with work, really, because things are oddly quiet around my part of the Evil Empire. But I'm still busy. Stuff that has been going on includes:

- We went to the Herbfarm last Friday, as a belated anniversary dinner. It was fantastic, and I really need to write up a post about it that includes the menu.

- Trying to get holiday shopping done. As always, my mother is VERY DIFFICULT to shop for. Tomorrow night is the traditional shopping trip with my Dad, which I always look forward to. (For those who haven't met him, my Dad is AWESOME. And crazy. Our yearly holiday shopping expedition is one of the highlights of the holiday season for me.)

- Dentist visits. Let's just say it has been a Very Long Time since I saw a dentist (what with being somewhat afraid of them AND dental insurance wackiness), but last week I finally unearthed my courage and went to one. As it turns out, this particular dentist is very cool (and funny!), so my fear is lessening. (It helps that he has his office set up so I can watch DVDs while he's working on my teeth; last night's movie was Addams Family Values) I now have five new fillings, and next year I have to have all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. No, I am not looking forward to this.

- Writing. I've been working on a bunch of different things, and oh hey! I really need to post a new GCS column, don't I? I'd better finish the current one ...

So, yeah. Busy. Plus being distracted by various things like the Help the Crew donation drive (clicky link, and one you really should click!) that Allyson Beatrice is organizing. (You did know that the Writers' Strike has affected more than just the writers, right? Support the crew!)

Other distractions include discussions on [livejournal.com profile] steamfashion, and various people making sure I saw this picture. ([livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage, don't click that link. You'll roll your eyes and make a fondly exasperated noise, trust me.)

So, with all of that, I've not been around much. I've been reading people's posts, but not commenting a lot.

  • Black granny boots, laced with pink ribbons, worn over black cotton tights.

  • Black knee-length "dolly bustle skirt" from Retroscope fashions, worn over pink knee-length petticoats.

  • Black blouse with a high ruffled collar.

  • Black wool waist-length double-breasted jacket with pink buttons*, and a silver chain (with tiny fobs of a skull & crossbones, a heart, and an antique-looking key) draped between the middle two buttons.

  • Pink and grey striped armwarmers/fingerless gloves (currently pushed up around my wrists).

  • Jewelry: in addition to the fob chain there are the usual giant silver rings, a pink and black skull cameo brooch (pinned at the center of the blouse collar), and my usual antique mini pocket watch necklace.

  • Makeup and hair: hair pulled up into a high ponytail and secured with lace-festooned hair ties. YSL Touch Eclat, translucent powder, black liquid liner, Aromaleigh "flirt a little" eye shadow at the outer corners and in the crease of my eyelids, and NARS "scarlet empress" lipstick. And my glasses.

*I "found" this jacket while rummaging through my upstairs storage heap room. Once again, I don't remember ever purchasing it. All I had to do to it was change the buttons from the kinda boring black plastic ones to some of my pink taffeta buttons. I don't know how my storage room keeps manifesting clothing I don't remember owning, but I'm not complaining.

Sigh. My storage room only manifests clothing that is either too small or hidious. I want your storage room instead of mine.

Ah, yes. Herbfarm, I really would like to drag the junya to that place. We got a full details from Gwen and Jim when they celebrated their anniversary at the Herbfarm. I have one of the cookbooks that inspires most of my cooking and Gwen shared with me a delightful recipe for popcorn chickpeas that are extremely addictive from another one of there published cookbooks.

I don't remember whether I've gushed about this to you, but Marty and I sort-of-know one of the owners of The Jones (http://www.thejonesbistro.com/), and their head chef was formerly sous chef at the Herbfarm. I think the menu on the website is a bit out of date, but the food at The Jones is incredible, and nowhere near as wallet-crippling as its erstwhile cousin. I highly recommend the duck.

Whew. For a while I was afraid you'd disappeared because I'd given you the hacking ick.

I don't mean to minimize your tooth fear

(since it's been Longer Than You since I went to a dentist...shudder)

But I had all 4 taken out in one day; the surgeon said, "It's cheaper, since you're paying cash, to have *one* application of anaesthesia".

I had *no* post-op pain stronger than a headache. And I made them put me out - not local, I was anaesthetized.

So it isn't entirely bad, automatically.

Re: I don't mean to minimize your tooth fear

I had all four removed at the same time, too (four full bony impactions, to boot -- ow!), and the recovery was pretty minimal -- I had it done on a Friday, and I was back at work on Monday (albeit somewhat chipmunk-cheeked.) Unless your dentist sees a reason not to, I'd get them all done at once just to minimize the recovery time.

They used 'twilight sleep' anaesthesia on me, and it worked very well.

I had to drop steamfashion. Too much signal to noise, and simply too many posts when it was signal.

When I got my teeth pulled, I got all 4 done at once. I had twilight anesthesia, and when I woke up, I really wanted to talk to the dentist about horses. (I still have no idea why.)

One of the best pieces of advice I got was this - get 4-6 bags of frozen peas. Use these as the facepacks, as they mold to the jawline a lot better than regular icepacks do, and afterwards you can eat them.

Also, both miso and protein powder become your friend.

When I woke up from mine, I saw tie-dyed beanie babies. I'm still scarred.

Sorry about the wisdom teeth. . .

I'm assuming that they gave you a legitimate reason for pulling your wisdom teeth, and aren't just pulling them because you have them.

It's good to check, though. Every time I've seen a "new" dentist, they've said, "oh, and we should talk about your wisdom teeth". And I've replied, "Why? Is there something wrong with them?", and they've always come back with, "No, but it's just a good idea to remove them, generally". As they say, WTF?? It's like a doctor recommending having your appendix out, ya know, just in case. Anything that involves anesthesia should only be done if it's actually necessary.

I got my wisdom teeth in when I was 16. I'm now 43, and I use them every day, for, oh, chewing my food. So, when they say that we have to "talk about my wisdom teeth", I firmly refuse! :B

Send some of your magic to my closet. It seems to just manifest clothing that is either too small or too ugly.

During the coming year I have committed to overcoming my dentist-phobia as well. It has been longer than I care to admit and now I am worried what he will even say!

Aww, that's a lovely picture of Gerard.

I saw a picture of him taken a month or so ago, after he came offstage, and it worried me, honestly. He looked absolutely peaked and he had CHEEKBONES. He isn't supposed to have those! I hope they get a nice long break, and SOON, before touring kills them!
