As concerns mourning....

I wish I'd know you were addressing this issue in your latest column, perhaps I could have contributed. Here's what I did when my parents died in the space of six weeks in the summer of 2004. Because I find it easier to process my grief and loss via visible mourning, so I wore mourning in varying 'stages' for a full year. I covered my hair for the entire year, be it with hats, dread extensions, wigs, or doo-rags. I wore black, white, and grey for the first six months in all visible clothing. For the second six months, I added any shade of purple & lavender. I also didn't go out much in public by myself for the first month or so after my mum's death, but that was due to shell-shock as much as anything, I suppose.

I must say, the first colour I put on when that year was over was rather bright pink. :)

-d, nice column, btw.

In regards to the teacher issue, you do in fact know or know of two, one being the ex-teacher, myself, and the other being a sometime DJ at the club, [livejournal.com profile] kaosqueen. During my teaching years, I stuck mostly to vintage dresses or grey or blue wool slacks with the jewel-toned blouses you'd mentioned.

Teaching in Louisiana, I was required to take out all my visible piercings except for the first in each lobe, but nothing was ever said about my wardrobe.

Teaching here in Washington, I was asked politely but firmly by our school principle to refrain from wearing my black leather trench coat, and to keep my hair down over my ears as much as possible, to hide all the hoops, but nothing was ever said about my nose ring, and in fact, I wasn't the only one to have one.

I was going to point out that there are at least two teachers (one ex, one current) but the previous post beat me to it.

The teacher one was exceptionally good, and really fantastic advise. I may try to sign up to be a subsitute teacher since my job at a bookstore is slowly driving me mad. Now I know better how to sort of prepare, clothes-wise, for it.

Another fantastic edition of GCS.

As a non-Goth, thoroughly my own person teacher in an ever-more conservative school -- what a wonderful response to the new teacher you made! Of course, I think it's wonderful because it's what I end up telling all the new teachers eventually: find out who YOU are, and BE THAT. Some students will like you, and some won't, and it's not a popularity contest. But if you're not yourself in this intensely intimate relationship (tho not at all sexual- ew), you'll go nutso.

I'd add one thing: if one is a person in charge of modeling adult behavior -- the adults you are forming them to become -- one cannot break the rules one would like them to learn to follow. I make certain I dress modestly and appropriate to the task at hand, wherever else the whimsy might take me.

Thanks for another terrific lesson!

Flying out the door to work in a second (BOO!!! to crappy retail hours) so I'll read the GCS when I get home (or when I'm slacking at work and noone is around ;) )

Congrats on the interview! Link to where to listen?

Also, was Stumbling around on the internet and came across this and thought of you. Don;t know what the quality is though:
