I want to Do Stuff to my hair. Specifically, I want to eventually have primarily cupcake pink hair with black bangs and streaks. What I can't figure out is: is this just my every-three-months-or-so urge to change my hair, or is it my "I'm stressed out about stuff ooh I coud do something to my hair color!" reaction?

Either way, if I do end up doing this, there is going to be RESEARCH involved. I've been coloring the black parts of my hair with demi-perm (Wella ColorCharm) for over a year now, and that should be easier to lift/remove than the old classic of N1 permanent color, right?

Also, if I end up doing this, I would somehow convince myself to be patient (I can hear the Stroppy One laughing at that statement) and let my natural color grow out for a while. ::shudder::

It is possible to strip black out but it's best done over several days doing deep conditioning between stripper. Also it might be better to do burgandy for a while because getting all the black out without it being a bit orangeish is very difficult. last time I stripped out black it took almost a year to get the bright purple I wanted without it being tinged a bit burgandy from the dye residue growing out but I have long hair.

I'm glad you've been using the demi. That will make a *huge* difference in getting the color out.

The pink in my icon is AP over yellow roots and brassy orange at the bottom from getting rid of the black. It was a deeper pink than I wanted, but (at least to me) a lot closer than having pink roots with black everywhere else. Are you open to going with a deeper pink where the black is now if you remove the demi? I think a darker pink, lighter pink and black color scheme could work out marvelously with your style and your wardrobe. ;)

this is a stress reaction. I am positive. It just.. I dunno... doesn't feel quite as "idly pondering" as your usual quarterly desire to Change Your Hair. This way lies madness.

Color Oops is amazing. I just went from black to a light, neon green.
You strip the color, wait a week with deep conditioning (hats and wigs ahoy!), bleach it if needed, and dye away. Works like a charm.

The fact that it's not real hardcore black n1 will make things so much easier. You might get away with just stripping the black, depending on what the hair was prior to the black.

OR: you could always just get a lot of pink extension hair and add that to your own hair. That way you can have more pink without damage..

You could start letting your natural color grow out - which would give you time to consider if this is a passing fancy or if you really want to make the change...

Just my two cents but...it really does sounds like you know what your motives are. Even though stress is involved, you have mentioned how much you long for pink hair several times before.

I would say try growing in out some more and use a less than "demi" color. I know these will not give you the true black you have now but they can deepen you natural color to the point that you don't run screaming for the stronger hair dye.

I made a huge (for me) color change when I turned 45. I actually went back to my natural color. It was shocking and strange to me, but I had to admit that it looked much better....not that I am advocating "natural" color, not at all.

I miss my colored hair but health issues and *age* made the color look less than flattering.

Whatever you decide, good luck. You always look lovely:)

When I went from black to colours, so very long ago, I just dyed the roots. It sort of looked like my hair was naturally growing in from black to a box-dye red. (This was before I went over to silly colours.) Generally people seemed to think it was a pretty cool effect, and it saved me having to deal with my dreadful White Girl Brown for any length of time at all. So this is a possible strategy as well.

I'm in the same boat. I have all black hair, but would kill for purple and black, but need to find the best way to start stripping it. I have a combo of demi-perm and Nice N Easy (shudder) so I suspect I may have a rougher time of getting the color out (if it's even possible!)

If it were me I'd start growing it out while using some kind of dark-pink/burgundy over the natural color - something that will bleach out to a color that's compatible with pink. That way you don't have to live with the totally natural color while you want, you still get something subtly interesting.

Of course I'm also partial to burgundy hair :)

pink hair that is long = not able to wear black and white striped things or pure white, hell not even ivory, without staining ALL OF IT. Take it from me.

I think that the delicate side streaks that you have done are relatively safe for your clothing and hats. But on the long term, with all pink and a little black - even your sheets would get stained. Hell, eventually every single thing in your house would get slightly pink, which is tough for reselling.

So....wigs? Real professional human hair extensions done by a professional?
