Realizing that I have all the ingredients to make a batch of vanilla cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting? Perhaps dangerous.

Perhaps.

But it gave me an excuse to use my bat-festooned cupcake wrappers.

The only thing that keeps me from making cupcakes (well, aside from out-and-out laziness, which is really the critical factor) is that I'm inordinately terrified of buttercream. It's in the same realm as pie crust for me. Nigella Lawson puts royal icing, which I can easily do, on cupcakes, but that's not quite the same as a nice fluffy buttercream.

At this point I've got wrappers festooned with bats, skulls, spirals, and Nouveau-esque swirls (with words on the bottom that I am choosing to ignore). I went a little overboard this year.

I'd never made buttercream before. It started out a little ... solid, but I just kept adding tiny amounts of water, and it turned out gorgeous. Very rich and silky.

All the baking-types I know are wary of pie crust. I don't get it, because I have no problems when I make pie crust.

Yeah, I've got wrappers with bats, an overwrought wallpaper sort of print with skulls, and spiders, because someone gave them to me. I may end up purchasing MORE cupcake wrappers, I don't know.

Pie crust, buttercream, and caramel are the things that unnerve me so much that I won't even try them. I don't know why (well, I do with the caramel--boiling-hot sugar is DANGEROUS). Most other baking/confectionery I want to do, I just find a recipe as a guide and go for it, but those three are like big walls in my pastry adventures that I won't even attempt to climb.

This has nothing to do with it, but I love the word "festooned". :)

Also, cupcakes are always appropriate.

And you can fedex me some of that when you are done making them. ;)

Yay baking! Fall is my favorite time of year, partly for the baking and soup-making. In the last couple of weeks Shanti and I have made three different kinds of bread, a spiced cake, two kinds of cookies, and two kinds of soup. Heaven.

Cupcakes and butter cream. Ok, I know I'm going to hurt myself for asking this, but are you posting pictures of it BEFORE the carnage of the consumption of said confections? :P
