Remember that vampire scholarly conference I posted about yesterday? The one that I really wish I could attend? I downloaded the schedule and looked at it, just for amusement.

LOOK AT THE OPENING TALK!!

Plenary: Gothic Charm School, or, How Vampires Learned to Sparkle - Dr. Catherine Spooner

I'm sure it has nothing to do with MY Gothic Charm School. But still! Oh, I am so amused. (Even if I am very much on record stating that vampires. Do. NOT. Sparkle.)

I need to find a contact for the author, so I can write her and say I wish I could be there for her talk.

This is what I was thinking. You want to make sure your copyright/trademark is protected.

Not necessarily. This is, after all, a conference, and it is not trademarked yet (unlike items like WorldCon or ComicsCon.) Certainly, the Venters' trademarks (Her words and His design) are trademarked and cannot be used without permission. However, the title itself, since this is an educational conference, may not fall under the same jurisdiction.

And then you get into the fact that I believe the University is of foreign extraction? The rules become even more complicated.

A polite letter to the august author in question, stating the commonality between Ms. Venter's column (and book) and the author's conference is certainly to be encouraged, but not necessarily needs lawyers.

Oops, this is actually an inside joke w/ Jilli (as much as there's ever anything "funny" about a C&D), and not a cry to release the hounds. =)

My apologies then. I figured you were joking because of the smiley face at the end of your original comment, but since several others were jumping on the bandwagon... Well, I was hoping I could nip it in the bud.

I'd love to hear about the inside joke sometime. :)

Plus, her name is Spooner! Maybe she's related to THE Spooner!

I dug out my Modern Language Association directory, just in case she was a US or Canadian academic. She's not listed there, but there's got to be a UK equivalent. In any case, academics tend to make ourselves quite easy to find . . .
