Today is the next-to-last-day of my current work contract. On the one hand, looming unemployment and job-hunting, ugh. On the other hand, time to work on the novel I started writing on New Year's Day, time to finish clearing out the Storage Heap Room o' Doom, and time to make stuff to sell at Mourning Market and my eventually-to-be-launched Etsy store. So, mostly yay, I think.

My Dad, because he is a helper and an enabler, made the brilliant suggestion that I need to find an oversized bird cage to keep my doll in. Like this, or this, or this! (yes yes, clicky-links to eBay.) My friends who have long listened to me talk about my need for decorative cages to keep decorative people in understand why this suggestion is so appealing to me.

Speaking of my Evangeline Ghastly doll, I realized that I'm not entirely decided on her name. I thought it was Lucretia, but then the Stroppy One suggested Pandora. But neither of those seemed to stick, which I think means I haven't found her name yet. Vexing, very vexing.

Awwww! Jake von Slatt over at Steampunk Workshop wrote a very nice review and article about the Gothic Charm School book! (clicky-link!)

Everyone needs to go read the newest law of the Internet, because it is BRILLIANT: http://www.racialicious.com/2009/12/21/and-we-shall-call-this-moffs-law/

And finally, here, have a SFD photo (EDIT: bah, I don't like my expression or how I was tilting my head in this picture, but it shows the details of the outfit):

I'm sure that the right name will come to you, leaving you agog at why that particular name didn't occur to you previously. Do not be tempted to rush it. A name influences the doll's entire personality. You must be sure that you choose the right one!

Your icon! Where did you get it? May I copy it? Because I think it's brilliant.

From: [identity profile] gloomsan.livejournal.com

Of course, I didn't make it, I found it on a icon page through google

I'm almost definate I got it here

Just wanted to say that I love your outfit. The way all the different textures work together is brilliant.

What a lovely article and relevant to the fiction I'm going to be working on next. I love your book, btw, I've been reading GCS for ages. Next time we meet up, you need to sign it. Maybe we should schedule tea at the British Pantry again.

I have my Poisez doll in a bird cage. I really like the first cage you listed.

Also you have inspired me to examine these further. I think I want this one:

We have the same coloration, she and I.

I was about to suggest that! Especially since my husband just read I, Claudius, and I spent a lot of time telling him that yes, Livia really did poison __. =)

An Etsy store?! You most definitely have my support!! :Db

From: [identity profile] mimi-monsterr.livejournal.com

I love the name Pandora, but it just seems to be overused nowadays, like it's a bit goth cliche? over here in the UK anyway.

Myself and my friend are looking into getting a giant birdcage for us to perform trapeze in :) they're so pretty!

From: [identity profile] slytherin13.livejournal.com

OOH! I like that Bird Cage idea & that your dad is an enabler! ha!

Morticia, Angelique, Bellatrix, Carmella/Carmilla, Desdemona, Narcissus, Esmeralda, Sheeba, Angelita, Lenore . Those names come to mind.

GothDad is, indeed, an enabler. One of the many things we love about him. Yes. ~sagenod~

And Moff's Law? *brilliant*. I can just see it now... some brainless bozoid at a party or sommat starts rabbiting on about how we should all just take $foo on its merits, rather than dissect and analyse... I can just point and yell, "Moff's Law, bitches!" Hey, it'll end the insipid nattering, at least, right? Even if it just makes the random bozoid blink at me in non-comprehension. (Not that I ever get that, or anything...)

SFD inquiry

or as the Browncoats call it: "boosting the signal"

A very dear friend is looking for a pair of black button-up black boots (what most muggles would call victorian style) with a flat heel. Suggestions would be greatly and grandly appreciated.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Re: SFD inquiry

Hmmm, honest-to-goodness button boots? Or boots with button detailing? Because the former are extremely difficult to find.

If boots with button detailing and a *low* heel are okay, then the Whimiscal boots (http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=node/192) from Clockwork Couture are fantastic. The Spatterdash Booties (http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=node/191) look like they'd be great, but I haven't tried a pair on.

From: [identity profile] princekermit.livejournal.com

Re: SFD inquiry

Thank you!

I am given to understand button-detailing (which is good) however zero heel (which sounds like it may be problematic). Are you just going off the standard keywords of buttons/gothic/victorian/steampunk or are there more specific words a neophyte like myself might not know?

Thanks again, Miss J. I truly appreciate it.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Re: SFD inquiry

Zero heel is going to be problematic, because finding truly flat boots is something like finding a winning lottery ticket; it *could* happen, it's just not very likely. The best option for your friend may be to find a pair of flat lace-up boots that she likes, and then get a pair of nice button-detailed spats from Etsy.

I didn't use any keywords to find those previous boots; I, um, just happen to be very familiar with Clockwork Couture's stock. Go figure. :)

That doll looked like a Corwinna to me...

From: [identity profile] krafen.livejournal.com

Very nice. Even with the head tilt, you didn't get the whole feather into the picture, though. ;)

So, your decorative cage plotting has finally come to fruition. I look forward to photos.

Wow

I love this delicious outfit - so opulent and antiquey ~ gorgeous! Good luck with your Etsy store and the future job hunts! I look forward to reading your (published) novel one day...

Somebody's had a (fetching) bang trim for the new year.

From: [identity profile] girlghoul.livejournal.com

Did you make the skirt? If so where did you find that divine velvet on the top? I'm drooling.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

The pointy velvety overskirt is from Lip Service! It's from the Requiem for the Dead ii line.

From: [identity profile] girlghoul.livejournal.com

Oooh well pooh. They just don't make stuff large enough for my very curvy hips. :( I do covet it greatly. Oh and I'll be at the Mourning Market too.. well my creations will be. [livejournal.com profile] pandorasbox is working the table for me.

That's a pretty outfit. I don't know if it'll cheer you up a bit, but here:

Moff's law...Is there a way to make the entire population of youtube read it?

Also, I vote birdcage #2.

From: [identity profile] kipar.livejournal.com

Lillian just popped into my head as the name for your lovely doll.

From: [identity profile] burrell.livejournal.com

Two thoughts: One, I am in love with your outfit. S'beautiful. Two, My MiL, an avid doll and Victoriana collector, might have some advice about the bird cage. I could ask if you'd like. I know she's had (and sold) some in the past.

From: [identity profile] candlelight-sky.livejournal.com

I love your skirt! I hope you find the right name for your doll soon. I am a long-time GCS reader I cannot wait to see an Etsy store from you!

From: [identity profile] morseren.livejournal.com

I also have an Evangeline Ghastly I need to name. I have been contemplating words/names from Edgar Allen Poe works. Right now Eulalie is in the lead. I also am considering Percy, since I am a big fan of Percy Shelley as well. Finding a name that is both haunting and musical is proving difficult;)

Perhaps favorite fiction or poetry characters might be a place to look.

From: [identity profile] bork.livejournal.com

Thanks for the point to the article to Moff's Law. That was a wonderful essay.

From: [identity profile] blutsauger.livejournal.com

Moff's Law: o_O Okay, so we now need a LAW to spell it out: Don't Be Redundant!

But I found the article behind it much more interesting. White guilt. It brings back to my mind this work of some philosopher whose name I forgot that whites should start to see themselves as a race aswell. That it is not like Blacks and Asians and Jews. Oh, and us. No, it's Blacks and Asians and Jews and Christians and Whites and Idiots and Murderers and Saints and so on (order of enumeration has no meaning whatsoever). When do people learn that outer appearance is the result of evolutionary advantages and not of Good and Bad or True God and False God or even No God?! You hear it everywhere, it's not important who you are, but what you do.
