Today, to walk to the thrift store, fabric store, and grocery store, it was cool enough to

  • black pointy-toe flats

  • black & orange narrow-striped socks

  • black straight stretch velvet skirt w/ multiple rows of lace trim at the hem

  • black stretch velvet overdress w/ white satin collar & cuffs. Yes, just like Wednesday Addams

Walking home, I was stopped by an elderly lady who asked me about my clothes, said that she's seen other people dressed in a similar style, and thought it was absolutely lovely. I (very briefly) explained Goth to her. She was tickled by the whole concept, and announced that she was going to start wearing all the elaborate black clothes she always wanted to. She also said that she had wanted to ask me about my look ever since she saw me, but didn't feel comfortable about doing so until she figured out I lived in the neighborhood.

Next shallow fashion rambling:

I'm dithering about what the heck I'm going to wear to Pirate Night this Saturday. At this point, the only things I know for sure that I'm wearing are a black satin overbust Victorian-style corset, a black velvet frock coat, and a black tricorn w/ black coque feather trim. What I'm still dithering about? White foofy pirate shirt or black sheer-ish one (worn under the corset & frock coat, of course)? Knee-length black velvet bloomers w/ lace trim, worn with vertically-striped stockings & buckle shoes, or giant black & white striped ball skirt? I'm leaning towards the black sheer pirate shirt and velvet bloomers worn under the corset, with the frock coat topping it all off (and covering my butt, thankyouverymuch), but I just! can't! decide! Why yes, I'll be subjecting The Husband to a mini fashion show to help me decide, how ever did you guess?

Speaking of

The Gothique fashion show is coming up in October, and I'm modeling in it. Wheeee! I spoke to the designer today, and she has some faaaaaaabulous ideas for what I'm going to be wearing and how her portion of the show is going to go, theme-wise. I'll be doing the shameless promotion thing about the show when it gets closer to the actual date.

See? Completely frivolous, all of this.

Jilli! I sent you a package today and with any luck at all? Some of it - perhaps the spider-webbish silver drop earrings with the small purple stone in the middle, or the black tassel earrings? - will make you happy.

Oooh! They sound lovely! I'm looking forward to rummaging through the package.

Well, when you open the red box? Rummage carefully. There are two necklaces in that, both delicate, one silver, one like fairy lights.

Oh, there's also a silver ring with an amethyst that may or may not fit. It rather speaks to the - why did I call them spidery-webby? The word I want is mesh, or filagree - earrings.

White shirt, black frock coat, black corset, and the bloomers. And DEFINITELY the shoes.

The skirts, etc are lovely, but not "pirate". The bloomers, etc will read a lot more mannish (well, for a loose, loose approximation thereof) and thus give you a touch of that subliminal "badass-pirate-wench-captain" thing.

If you go with the sheer and the skirts, the look will work, yes, but it won't have that sort of dashing/dangerous/swinging across to board look that a more free-moving and less restrictive set of garments would.

Especially with the tricorn. Go "lady pirate captain", emphasis on the "pirate captain" and less on the "lady".

Just my theatre-geek $.02...

I know, I know. I just have huge (HUGE) issues about going out in public wearing ... no skirt. Trouser-ish things. Me and the body-image demons are going to be having a talk about it, because I really do want to go with the bloomers. If I can manage the self-confidence to wear it, I think the outfit could be oodles of fun.

Would it be possible to have a skirt that is:

a) short enough (like above the knee, so basically for show) to allow for pirate-y movement

b) rucked up enough for the same? I'm thinking of the overskirts that are drawn/shirred up that court ladies in the 1800's wore (blast if I can find a name)

c) YAR!

Did you ever see Dangerous Beauty?

The scene where the lead heroine "duals" with this guy in a courtyard. Perhaps some variation on that look?

I am just thrilled by the elderly lady. It's like "when I am old I shall wear purple" except tasteful.
