China Glaze Lubu Heels nail polish: Black with lots of red microglitter. For the record, I pretty much only wear black nail polish. I will occasionally try a deep wine red or purple, and then be mildly weirded out that my nails are too light. So having red microglitter in my black polish is New and Exciting!

The Lubu Heels polish has pretty good coverage, and seems to be wearing well. (Of course, I topped it with the Seche Vite topcoat o' doom, so for all I know, the polish itself has no longevity.) The red microglitter adds a nice shimmer, and doesn't make the polish feel gritty.

MAC Mattene lipstick in Bing (from the Cult of Cherry line): Attention all goth ladies of A Certain Age! This is the closest color I've found to Revlon's original formula of Blackberry. It's a deep purple-y wine color with no shimmer. It wears well, and doesn't fade or cake strangely. It's a limited edition color, but I can't imagine it will sell out quickly; even though "the fall trend is for dark lips!", I suspect most people will be a little timid about Bing.

And speaking of that "the fall trend is for dark lips!" silliness ... if you want to spend $28 + shipping, you could go pre-order that YSL black lipgloss (clicky-link!). Which is also limited edition, and has sell-text that describes it as "transparent yet intense". Ooooo-kaaaaay.

Also jumping on this trend (but avoiding all mention of goth) is Lancome, with their black lipgloss + red lipstick set (clicky-link!) that apparently is inspired by "the sole of a Christian Louboutin shoe and not Bauhaus or Siouxsie." Again, ooooo-kaaaay.

(A side note: when [livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre sent me the link to the Blogdorf Goodman post about the Lancome set, I stared at the photo of the lips that were supposedly wearing the color duo, and then forwarded it to [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage, asking for a Photoshop verdict. I don't care what sort of miracle cosmetic product they're touting, there is no way that someone could get their lipstick & gloss to look like that photo in real life. [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage's comment was that yes, Photoshoppery was apparent, and the teeth looked like holes punched in the photo.)

I'll admit, I had "Ooooh shiny shiny pretty!" reactions to both the YSL and the Lancome products, but if I really need black lipgloss (which I probably don't), I'll buy it from NYX Cosmetics or Wet&Wild, for under $5. Probably while muttering about trendy fashion-victim types who want to wear black lip color or nail polish, but not only think that such things aren't goth, but will come up with wacky reasons and justifications for their delusion. Whatever, it just means that those of us who ARE goths can stock up on dark lipstick and nail polish this season. Right? Right.

Do you know about Sally Hansen's Lacquer Shine polish in "Glossy"? The website shows it as a dark plum-burgundy, but the website is wrong. It's black with red pearl. I haven't put it on my nails yet, but when I've tested it, it comes out as glossy black with a shimmery red undertone.

And I find that Lancome photo a huge turnoff, 'shoppery or not. Maybe 20 years ago I'd have wanted to look like I had black mold growing in the grooves of my lips, but now, ew.

"Glossy" is gorgeous. It's the color that OPI "Midnight In Moscow" dearly wishes it were, and it is VERY black with red pearl. The pearl, furthermore, is only visible in direct sunlight. How's that for irony? :)

After a minute or two of staring at the Lancome photo, I went "Wait, so emphasizing the grooves in the lips is a good idea? Oh not even."

I am very excited by the MAC mattene lipsticks, and well the entire Cult of Cherry line. The one downside is the big promo for it happens the day after I move. Maybe the move will cost less than I fear and I will have spare $$ for makeup. Yes! That could totally happen.

In which Mila demonstrates her makeup whoreness

MAC has a black lipgloss for $11.50 on their website (also a chestnut with gold shimmer they recommend mixing with it, but I'm holding out for a red). I've tried the Wet & Wild but didn't find it had much color to it (cutest packaging ever, though--black cat!--and worth buying for that)--sounds like I should check out the Nyx.

A couple of years ago I went to the Aveda store to get a lipstick shade I'd seen in an ad. The staff gave me the rundown of the five products I'd need to actually attain that look, which was not a reasonable purchase in my book. Photoshop or not, it seems that ads may not ever be a reasonable portrayal of what's actually available. Which is dumb. :-(

They're not. I have never, ever, EVER gotten the colors out of Revlon products (especially the seasonal/trendy special editions) that appear in their ads. (I think here of that "Lightning" lipstick they had back in 2000 or so that looked on the model like a profound lilac-plum shade, but in reality was basically dull beige with a slight plum undertone.) The other drugstore brands aren't quite as bad about it, but it happens with them too. (I don't shop the high-end stuff, so I can't speak to those. Buying most of my stuff now from small online companies that don't do traditional advertising is something of a relief in this regard.)

I remember Revlon "Lightning." I've found that "Orpheus" by NYX is what we all wanted that color to be -- a deep, metallic grey-lilac.

That image for the YSL makes me think of an updated Rocky Horror Picture Show logo.

I'm definitely going to have to make a trip to Nordys to buy some bing if it's truly that blackberry shade. I miss having dark purplish lipstick.

See, the thing that bothers me isn't that they're wearing it, or even insulting us and other subcultures they steal from WHILE wearing it-- it's that, because they don't actually get the appeal, the things they produce usually miss the mark for me. I have to sift through metaphorical piles of crap to find the one awesome thing they made by accident. Like the skull thing-- of all the suddenly-available skull products, I've found maybe two I want.

/end whining. =)

Oh, look: They want $70 to customize shoes for people (http://www.zazzle.com/kedsstudio). Yeah.

Will you think less of me if I buy the YSL gloss? I keep seeing ads for it and want to try it.

I want the original blackberry color AND formula, as mattes make me feel like my lips are about to peel off always.

Drat it.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

The Mattenes are a strangely moist matte-finish lipstick. Most of MAC's mattes give me the same feeling as you, but this one doesn't. If you want to try my tube, you're more than welcome to.

Sure. You should try my lacquer shine in Lustrous, too (I don't have Glossy, and suspect Glossy would be *slightly* less black than you want, but I'll check the nail gallery for pics.)

I find it really amusing/hypocritical how the labels obviously take inspiration from goth but go out of their way to deny it, because a) goth is uncool and b) they are loathe to admit *any* pop culture influence, they are too posh for that. Yet the latest thing to come in is rosary bead necklaces. So very Robert Smith in '84. I was wearing that shit in '02. Have you seen the Autumn/Winter collection from Luella? A lot of it's a bit hideous (orange check? Noooo!) but the last few dresses are great.
