So I guess today is the day for quotes that make me growl and clutch my head in my hands. From an article about the Twilight series and the release of the 4th book, a quote from the author:

She didn't even know much about vampires when she started. "My vampires are very light. Since I started writing, I've learned more about how other vampires roll, so to speak, and it's a very sensual thing, the blood-drinking, the sex and violence. Mine is more about attraction."

I think my plans for the weekend (writing, writing, more writing, and some household chores) now need to include re-reading Dracula and re-watching Near Dark*. You know, two stories that are about predatory and bloodthirsty vampires, not spaaaaaarkly twoo wuv "very light" vampires.

*Mind you, I will stop the DVD before it gets to the end of the movie, because the ending of Near Dark makes me very cranky.

That's what I really liked about 30 Days of Night.

They were predators, period.

Re: I'll do my best...

So what you're saying is that I need to wear my fangs tomorrow night and hiss at you? Ohhh-kaaaay ...

Oh, I LOVED 30 Days of Night. I seem to remember waving my hands and enthusiastically burbling at you about it.

at least now we know WHY she has sparklypoo vampires.

It makes it FAR LESS OKAY, but at least now we know.

This is right up there with Burton and his "I won't read any comics" attitude when making Batman. :/

I could loan you my 30 Days of Night DVD too.

As for Near Dark - I'm totally with you on that. I generally liked the movie except for the totally implausible parts - like the ending...

I loved 30 Days of Night. The only reason I don't own it yet is because there's a new release of the DVD coming out soon, so I'm waiting for that.

Oooh!

I missed it in the theater so I ran out to get it when it was released on DVD so I could finally see it.

Um, I don't think there's a new release of it coming, we're just waiting to get a Blu-Ray player and then purchase it on that format.

Are you getting an LG with Netflix streaming built in? If I had an HD TV that would be very tempting.

From: [identity profile] stroppy-baggage.livejournal.com

Jury's out on that one. I'm a little wary of LG as I find they're just not as reliable as the Panasonic's, etc. The inclusion of streaming Netflix in interesting but a lot of what I want isn't available for streaming anyway.

Speaking of vampires as predators...

You've read Sunshine (http://www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Robin-McKinley/dp/0425224015/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217623252&sr=8-2) by Robin McKinley, yes?

What did you think?

From: [identity profile] spitecandy.livejournal.com

eh, sue me for liking pretty and hating gross. Im sorta anti-rape and gore too. I think I skipped Near Dark because of the hillbillies.

tangent: My friend wrote the 30 Days of Night Comic. Well, one of them.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

See, I grew up reading horror novels, so the current-ish trend of non-predator vampires confuses me. And in some cases, I'm okay with the idea of "vegetarian" vampires. But the writing of the Twilight series just makes me twitch.

(I like pretty AND gore. But yeah, would rather not read rape stuff, thanks.)

As for your tangent: oh, how cool! How did your friend feel about the movie?

From: [identity profile] spitecandy.livejournal.com

I just found out he wrote the one based on the screen play, not the original. ah well. and he did write a few Angel books too. hope that redeems him.

I guess we all need to remember that the twilight books are meant for teenagers written by a christian mom lady based on a dream she had . I wouldnt want anyone reading dreams Ive had. They are bat shit crazy. Shes from my town and I gotta give props. The last big thing to come out of Phoenix were Jimmy Eat World and the Gin Blossoms. Cut us some slack if our vampires dont look and act like Klingons.

Watch Near Dark, see Hillbillies die!

Seriously, it's just about the best vampire movie ever, except for the last ten minutes. We do not speak of the last ten minutes.

From: [identity profile] spitecandy.livejournal.com

Im pretty sure the only part Ive ever seen were the last 10 minutes so maybe thats my problem.

Are you still interested in that complete set of clan book novels? If so I'll put them in a sack for you, otherwise, they're going to half price books.

From: [identity profile] chicating.livejournal.com

That chick can't write at all, although I'd love to know how Ms. Meyer covered the pages in crack to get me to read so much of it.
I think Joss Whedon did a much better job of capturing the humor and ethical questions without making his mythology danger-free.I don't have a lot of vampire-reading experience, but I know that you probably shouldn't make your vamp just like a MUCH-older man. He's not human...not on this plane. Hello?
And, okay, you're squeamish. I could almost forgive that though it makes vampire fiction an odd choice, to put it mildly.
The worst part of those books is bella's complete lack of, dare I say it, soul. She's such a little lackey, I hate her guts. She does homework, washes dishes, and pines. That's it.

OK, now I really want to know what happens in the last 10 minutes of Near Dark, even though I haven't seen the movie.

While I'm here, your video interview was fantastic! (And I really want a balance ball now.)

You know, I like predatory and bloodthirsty vampires. But at the same time, I've always liked the idea of conflicted, human vampires (after all, that is their root), a la non-crazy-era Anne Rice.

Meyer didn't create a new kind of vampire. She made another garden-variety immortal that just might, sometime, every now and then, want some blood. Only a little.

Yes, I will be out tonight. :) And after going through all of my stashes of Shiny Things, I have one ring for you.

yay! That's more than I was able to find at the Metro...:) Yay for shinies!

Sorry, barging in again. I love your sfds so I friended you, hope you don't mind.

Have you read Varney the Vampire? It pre-dates Dracula by 50 years and I am surprised at how much of our current ideas of vampire might have been influenced by it. Varney is a predator and yet in parts he "considers" what he is and his place in the world. Not Anne Rice vampire like but something beyond a monster, I guess. Yes, it is a convoluted read but well worth the effort especially is you can get hold of a copy that is not edited with the non-vampire things taken out. Since it was a Penny Dreadful and was serialized it does ramble and is much like a modern soap opera...Dark Shadows is how it strikes me. Even so it is one of my favorites out the the hundreds of vampire novels I have. Too bad there is not some re=tellings of Varney like there is with Dracula.

Twilight...I have not been able to get past the first book. The vampires are too...not-vampires, I guess. Hehe, sparkling vampires...I wonder what she might do with Werewolves;)
