::looks over at [livejournal.com profile] smu, apologizes::

I was completely unaware that there's this whole meta-fandom thing going on with the Twilight series. Well, maybe not quite meta-fandom, but anti-fandom with a dose of meta. People who have been very active in other fandoms, banding together over snarking about Twilight, but not trolling the actual earnest fans of the series who aren't on the "Good god, you have to read this! It's so amazingly ... crap! Your head will explode! It's funny!" bandwagon.

Which leads to things like the icon on this post. If you want more info, head on over to this post in [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's LJ, and marvel at the REALLY BAD Entertainment Weekly cover. Hoo-boy.

Did you people know that various bookstores are going to be holding Twilight PROMS to celebrate the release of the 4th book? The U-Village B&N is one of them. [livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre thinks I should show up in my usual clothes, but with a dusting of shimmery powder on all my exposed skin, and wearing my fangs. I, while curious to see the spectacle and madhouse that this event might be, am not going to be doing that. It edges a bit too close to making fun of the fans of the series, and I try not to mock anyone for whatever their interests are. I may shake my head sadly and wish they had latched on to other things to be obsessive about, but I don't want to do anything that would ruin their fun.

But oh god. Sparkly vampire prom. It might look a bit like this photo, now that I stop to think about it. Which, btw, neatly illustrates why I don't have a leg to stand on about mocking people for their dorky interests. I too have gone to a vampire prom. We just weren't spaaaaaarkly.

I don't see why it would be making fun to show up being sparkly -- it's in theme, after all!

Pardon me while I exercise as much control and restraint as I possibly can muster at this point.

Please, I beg of you, don't subject me to that much in one post again... it's too much to take.

The fliers for the spaaaarkly vampire prom say that people should dress up as "vampires, werewolves, or humans!"

(Yes. Teen angst with vampires AND werewolves! Wait, why does that sound so familiar ... ?)

Your hair was obscuring Kyle...

That picture was a real blast from the past.

As opposed to what it used to obscure, which would normally include at least one bass player...

K showed me the EW cover yesterday. Oh my lord. It's almost as if they're *trying* to be as ridiculous as possible.

As for the photo...well, I'm pretty sure I suppressed my pointing and laughing the last time you posted that, so it would only be kind to do the same this time. :P (Not that I have a leg to stand on in that realm either...)

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Go ahead, point and laugh. That's kind of my reaction to the photo, too. And then an overwhelming urge to reach back through time and pinch our wan little faces.

And yes, the EW cover is ... wow. I hope the art director amused themselves with the photo shoot.

I am actually holding a prom party for the release of Breaking Dawn at my library! I'm no fan of the books myself, but my library is full of teens who LOVE them, and they're really excited about the release party, which is pretty great to see.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Oh, that's awesome! While I think the books are so-bad-they're-hysterical (and have caused me to rant a lot), I'm happy about anything that gets people reading.

I heard about this recently and accidentally giggled in front of some very earnest fans. I didn't mean to.

I try not to mock anyone for whatever their interests are.

...which is reason #372 why I love you.

This Twilight thing gives me the same feelings that the Firefly/Serenity trend gave me. Which means it kind of made me itchy as if breaking out in hives, but nothing a little calamine lotion and rational thinking could not cure.

Incidentally, D can look like that icon in the right makeup light *grins and points at hers*

I am wearing Aromaleigh's Metamorphosis powder today, which means I am pale and sparkly. But ew, the E! Weekly cover, vampires don't have CHEST HAIR. ;)

BWAH!

Oooh, I got my powder yesterday. It is not sparkly. This is good.

But! *They* won't know you're making fun!

Unless, of course, you point and laugh.

Which you would never do. So...go! Then you can tell us all about it!

Also, that EW cover looks like the two actors were photographed separately and Photoshopped together. There's just a weirdness to their poses. And then again, it could be vampire dude's paleness. But I don't know -- look at his hands: they don't look like they're actually *touching* her.

If I see the magazine in a store this weekend, I'll have to look more closely (certainly not buy it).

Maybe they're not touching her so his makeup won't rub off.

When is this photo from? Two faces lead me to believe it is from pe-Cam days another tells me during the Cam.

You're right

1994. House Addams was in full swing.

*marvels*

I had *hair*. And yours, of course, had already eaten all of Malkavia.

::laughs:: It's okay. It's a hysterical icon made from a TERRIBLE cover. We just got it in my bookstore today and I recoiled in horror at it. Lord help me! The movie is going to be a b-movie disastor! Leave it to MTV to cast terrible people.

Thankfully, my bookstore will NOT be having a prom of any sort. My own prom was terrible enough (dear boy I went with, I'm sorry for kicking you in the balls in my stiletto heels... next time, don't try to grope me), I wouldn't want to repeat it at work with a horde of teenagers!

I'm starting to get an itchy feeling about those books. Love 'em to death, but the fanbase makes me want to scream! That's why I never got into Harry Potter, the fans were insane. The Twilight people are really starting to scare me, and then I scare myself going "oh god, I'm not like these people, am I?!".

Note to self... find other vampire novels... love Twilight, not so much love for the crazy, high-pitched tween girls that come in professing their undying love for Edward...

Just getting up to speed on all of this and I have to say I CANNOT BELIEVE this is the same glorious boy who played Cedric in GoF. What have they done to that beautiful young man? It looks like they flocked him like a CHRISTMAS TREE.

So what are you going to wear to the movie premiere?

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

It looks like they flocked him like a CHRISTMAS TREE.

BWahahahahahahahaa! Oh, that's a perfect description.

I am not going to the movie premiere. I am going to wait until the movie hits the Crest or some other second-string budget theatre, because I refuse to pay even matinee prices for it.
