First, the makeup question: speak to me of long-wearing, non-smudging eyeliner pencils, please. I am starting to prefer a less sharp or harsh line under my lower lashes, which means something other than liquid liner. But I haven't seriously shopped for pencil eyeliner in something like, um, two decades. Any recommendations?

Guilty pleasure music: No, not MCR, you sillies. I have NO GUILT about my geebling adoration for them. No, I'm talking about a blast from my hair metal past.

Last night after work, when picking me up from the bus stop, the Stroppy One motioned for me to get into the car quick quick quick! Because he knew I'd want to hear the brand new Motley Crue single.

::cackles gleefully, throws the devil horns::

I've spoken of my hair metal past before, right? That I knew of The Cure and Siouxsie in my teens, but didn't really know any gothy types, and that I actually discovered the existence of the Gothic Subculture in my very early 20s? Yeah. I was that strange girl in high school who read vampire books, listened to everything (New Wave, punk, pop, hair metal), and had friends from all of those scenes. But something about power chords and boys wearing lots of eyeliner REALLY spoke to me, so of course I liked Motley Crue.

(A brief tangent: While talking about this with the Stroppy One last night over dinner, I realized that one of the reasons I preferred (and still prefer) the hair metal scene to the grunge scene is that the hair metal guys were completely up-front about their sexism and the misogyny that was rampant in that scene. The grunge guys, in my experience, acted like they were sensitive feminist types, but that was a complete facade. Any girl the grunge guys were interested in who didn't reciprocate that interest? A bitch, a whore, a slut. Now, I didn't hang out with the Olympia grunge scene much, so maybe things were different there. But in Seattle and the northern suburbs? That's how things were. Of course, I actually preferred hanging out with the speed metal guys, because there were at least some glimmerings of intelligence there. They had to read, because how else were they going to get H.P. Lovecraft references for their lyrics?)

Anyway, the new Motley Crue single. Awwww, Nikki Sixx still has catchy songs in him! I would be tempted to see them on the tour that is coming up this summer (and of course attend dressed in High Victorian Gothic, because that would be FUNNY), but the tour is some sort of festival thing, and I don't care about any of the other bands on the line-up. But yes, I did buy the new single off of iTunes.

Shallow Fashion Details! I feel under the weather today (a cold? Allergies? The Magic 8-Ball says "Reply Hazy. Ask Again Later"), so I dressed to make myself especially happy.

  • Black patent pointy-toe mary janes.

  • Black & pink stripy tights.

  • Black knee-length full skirt that laces up the front with pink ribbon, worn over a knee-length pink petticoat.

  • Black Victorian-esque blouse with a high collar and ruffles.

  • Black shadow-stripe waistcoat with notched lapels and large pink taffeta buttons.

  • Hair and jewelry: hair pulled up into a high ponytail and secured with lace-festooned hair ties, the usual giant silver rings, tiny skull & crossbones earrings, and a necklace worn around the collar of the blouse. The necklace is an enormous puffy silver heart pendant with a silver skull & crossbones ornament (with pink crystals!) affixed to the front of the heart. It's strung on pink satin ribbon and tied around the neck of the blouse with a bow. (The pendant is what happens when I am let loose with assorted bits of jewelry and JB Weld Epoxy Putty. I'm delighted with it.)

  • Makeup: YSL Touch Eclat, translucent powder, black eye liner (pencil on the bottom, liquid on the top), MAC "pink papillion" eye shadow at the outer portion of my lids with some generic white sparkly shadow over the whole lid, black mascara, and NARS "chandernagor" lipstick. And glasses, because my eyes are FAR too watery and itchy to even think about contact lenses.

Ah, yes -- I powder before, because the 24/7 really wants a bone-dry, non-oily surface. I don't, however, powder afterward.

Wait, powdering before applying the liner? Hmmm. I haven't tried that before. I sense an experiment tomorrow morning ...
