First, the makeup question: speak to me of long-wearing, non-smudging eyeliner pencils, please. I am starting to prefer a less sharp or harsh line under my lower lashes, which means something other than liquid liner. But I haven't seriously shopped for pencil eyeliner in something like, um, two decades. Any recommendations?

Guilty pleasure music: No, not MCR, you sillies. I have NO GUILT about my geebling adoration for them. No, I'm talking about a blast from my hair metal past.

::shares a Significant Look with [livejournal.com profile] cass404::

Last night after work, when picking me up from the bus stop, the Stroppy One motioned for me to get into the car quick quick quick! Because he knew I'd want to hear the brand new Motley Crue single.

::cackles gleefully, throws the devil horns::

I've spoken of my hair metal past before, right? That I knew of The Cure and Siouxsie in my teens, but didn't really know any gothy types, and that I actually discovered the existence of the Gothic Subculture in my very early 20s? Yeah. I was that strange girl in high school who read vampire books, listened to everything (New Wave, punk, pop, hair metal), and had friends from all of those scenes. But something about power chords and boys wearing lots of eyeliner REALLY spoke to me, so of course I liked Motley Crue.

(A brief tangent: While talking about this with the Stroppy One last night over dinner, I realized that one of the reasons I preferred (and still prefer) the hair metal scene to the grunge scene is that the hair metal guys were completely up-front about their sexism and the misogyny that was rampant in that scene. The grunge guys, in my experience, acted like they were sensitive feminist types, but that was a complete facade. Any girl the grunge guys were interested in who didn't reciprocate that interest? A bitch, a whore, a slut. Now, I didn't hang out with the Olympia grunge scene much, so maybe things were different there. But in Seattle and the northern suburbs? That's how things were. Of course, I actually preferred hanging out with the speed metal guys, because there were at least some glimmerings of intelligence there. They had to read, because how else were they going to get H.P. Lovecraft references for their lyrics?)

Anyway, the new Motley Crue single. Awwww, Nikki Sixx still has catchy songs in him! I would be tempted to see them on the tour that is coming up this summer (and of course attend dressed in High Victorian Gothic, because that would be FUNNY), but the tour is some sort of festival thing, and I don't care about any of the other bands on the line-up. But yes, I did buy the new single off of iTunes.

Shallow Fashion Details! I feel under the weather today (a cold? Allergies? The Magic 8-Ball says "Reply Hazy. Ask Again Later"), so I dressed to make myself especially happy.

  • Black patent pointy-toe mary janes.

  • Black & pink stripy tights.

  • Black knee-length full skirt that laces up the front with pink ribbon, worn over a knee-length pink petticoat.

  • Black Victorian-esque blouse with a high collar and ruffles.

  • Black shadow-stripe waistcoat with notched lapels and large pink taffeta buttons.

  • Hair and jewelry: hair pulled up into a high ponytail and secured with lace-festooned hair ties, the usual giant silver rings, tiny skull & crossbones earrings, and a necklace worn around the collar of the blouse. The necklace is an enormous puffy silver heart pendant with a silver skull & crossbones ornament (with pink crystals!) affixed to the front of the heart. It's strung on pink satin ribbon and tied around the neck of the blouse with a bow. (The pendant is what happens when I am let loose with assorted bits of jewelry and JB Weld Epoxy Putty. I'm delighted with it.)

  • Makeup: YSL Touch Eclat, translucent powder, black eye liner (pencil on the bottom, liquid on the top), MAC "pink papillion" eye shadow at the outer portion of my lids with some generic white sparkly shadow over the whole lid, black mascara, and NARS "chandernagor" lipstick. And glasses, because my eyes are FAR too watery and itchy to even think about contact lenses.

speak to me of long-wearing, non-smudging eyeliner pencils, please.

Urban Decay's 24/7 eyeliner (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P133707&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=3806) (clicky link) KICKS ASS. It's the only eyeliner I wear any more. It really-o, truly-o doesn't smudge, even when I forget and rub my eye, and it lasts all day (or until I take it off).

From: [identity profile] e-juliana.livejournal.com

I will second that, with the caveat that powdering like a mofo before and after is NECESSARY.

But! It's faboo, and the black really doesn't smudge, and the gunmetal and silver just sort of glitter away throughout the day.

From: [identity profile] stephl.livejournal.com

Ah, yes -- I powder before, because the 24/7 really wants a bone-dry, non-oily surface. I don't, however, powder afterward.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Wait, powdering before applying the liner? Hmmm. I haven't tried that before. I sense an experiment tomorrow morning ...

From: [identity profile] trudybooth.livejournal.com

Count me as another 24/7 girl.

I particularly like smudging eyeshadow through the line before it dries. THEN it dries into smoky pink or green or whatever weird iridescent thing I've chosen.

It really stays on remarkably well.

About a year ago, my old staple Wet 'n Wild eyeliner finally started smudging on me. It *had* been the only non-smudgy pencil around, bar none. Maybe they changed the formula? Maybe I got a bad new pencil? Dunno. But I tried Sephora's house brand black pencil, & it's pretty un-smudgy. Not perfect, but 85% there, & it doesn't cost a bundle (important bec. I wear it all the freakin' time). I also realized that non-waterproof mascara was causing smudges, so I started wearing waterproof all the time (used to just wear it when I felt watery-eyed). That decreased smudges dramatically.

Yes! YES, totally!!!!!!

ooooh yeah the Speed Metal guys were awesome \m/

I was into Metal and Punk in my teens and early 20's, i came even later to the Goth scene than you i think. I'm actually going to a Megadeth show next month ;p

heeeeee!

I knew no goths when I was in school. I too listened to metal (along with many other types of music). I still have a soft spot for it...

Will be gleaning the answers to your eye pencil query - because the Mac one I have does have nice color but it also smudges. In the past I've used Lancomb but it also smudges. It would help if I didn't rub my eyes so much probably...

From: [identity profile] m-cobweb.livejournal.com

MAC Powerpoint is the only pencil I've found that stays put on me. But best of all in my book is gel eyeliner, applied with a little brush. You get a lot of control over the width of the line that way (at least if you're not in a hurry, heh).

Whilst visiting Kat, we visited her local Sephora and played around with the samples. I found what looks to be a great eyeliner by Make Up For Ever called Aqua Eyes. I noticed how smooth and pure the colour was first (the black is very deep), and then afterwards noticed it had a little sign saying it was "award winning" to boot :)

In addition to matte black, they also have a frosted black, some nice purples and a lot of other shades. Worth checking out!

And back in elementary school my best friend & I had a crush on Nikki :)

From: [identity profile] alexiarnps.livejournal.com

I use the MAC liner for eyebrows as eyeliner. It's formulated to really, holyshit, not smudge, because you're supposed to wear it on your brows (where it is more oily than your lids). It's a twist up with a very fine tip and never needs sharpening.

musical spew:

I was just having the personal musical evolution discussion earlier with people. I find my roots to be disco, new-romantic, and new-wave..Finally onto gothy-esque leanings of those in early high school. with the 17-22 Years bringing to some of my personal favorites still that were on the noise end of things, Ramones leading to Minor Threat, Fugazi, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, with some ooold buttrock in there. (Black Sabbath/Ozzy/Kiss) Then leading to a lot of the rave-y oontz of the early 90's. I feel that it was the introduction of those that led me to a lot of the stompy goth music i fell in love with in my early twenties.

My 'doesn't come up that often in conversation' love would definitely be old Motown, funk, blues and jazz.

The only thing I really missed out of was all those bands that hold your heartstrings.. I just never got interested at all in the glam bands.. I have a slight fondness for Motley Crue, but that's about it.

I must ask you a SFD question. Do you wear sandals in the summer? I have a hard time visualizing them on you, but feet get so warm in shoes. Or at least mine do.

From: [identity profile] gaaneden.livejournal.com

If you haven't heard them, you MUST MUST MUST go find all of the Kamelot you can. They are gothic metal and I adore them.

From: [identity profile] lilmartini.livejournal.com

Argh! My makeup box is at home or I could get you the name of a liner I got last time I was in Sephora. I cannot remember the name but it's a liner pencil that does.not.smudge! I get nice, dark lines from it and if I wait and don't blink for about 5 seconds after applying, it does not move. It's also not a green/black so it has a nice dark color. I will check tonight when I get home.

::considers commenting on Olympia, but bites tongue instead::

(Granted, I was there in the last days of the scene as it was overtaken by the grrls, and only on the fringes, but Oly boys were ooky.)

Chanel or Armani eyeliners. Because you know I am a big 'ho wit' respect to the Chanel, in particular.

I do the wet brush in eyeshadow thing. I don't like the texture of pencils and they never last on me, though I'm tempted to try some of the ones mentioned below.

If you want to try something a little different, especially on special occasions, I recommend Eye Kandy (http://www.eyekandycosmetics.com/product_usage.html) (clicky-link). Made by a dancer for dancers, that stuff stays on through sweat, MCR shows, etc... it'll last all day no problem. But it comes off easily with eye makeup remover. Enables some very fun looks and comes in a ton of colors. I don't have any pics of me wearing any up on flickr, but if I remember I will upload tonight.

I'm a big fan of Urban Decay's 24/7 and MAC's Powerpoint Eye Pencil, Technakohl Liner and Eye Kohl (but I find the Eye Kohl to be a little 'smudgey')

From: [identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com

I'm another "eye shadow applied with a flat brush" gal. (A pointed lining brush will work as well, but I happen to prefer the control I get with a short angled flat brush.) Liquid stopped looking good on me a decade ago and I have always found pencils ridiculously aggravating; with this method, I can get as much coverage as I like and it's really easy, plus I can have any color of liner I want. If you do it wet or with a sealant, it will last really well. (Hell, I just cried for half an hour, and my applied-wet blackened-metallic-green liner stayed in place.) However, if you're an eye-rubber, it won't, so there's that to consider.

I'm cheap, so I use Revlon's Colorstay pencil, and then put eye shadow over it with a flat, angled brush. The pencil is black, but the shadow isn't always black. Dark purple or green goes nicely as a topping.

Our Shameful Metal Pasts really do overlap quite a bit.

I might have made a squeaky sound when you told me there was new Crue. It's very exciting. The things I wore have me facepalming occasionally in retrospect though.

Album drops on my BIRTHDAY! This is a sign, yes?

Um, and I might be listening to 'Home Sweet Home' and giggling delightedly a lot these days.
