Pie pie pi pi pi pie!

Today is Pi(e) Day! Blog about pi or pie!

Well all righty then! First things first: I am Not A Math Person. No, seriously. My lack of understanding for math and math-related things is near-legendary among my friends. (I once passed an algebra class by adhering to the theory that when in doubt, X = 8.)

But, Pi! It's an irrational number, how cool is that? Okay, yes, I immediately think of the definition of "irrational" as in how it is frequently applied to me, instead of the mathematical definition, but still! Nifty, and think I'm going to spend a bit of my afternoon reading up more about Pi.

As for pie, the yummy baked treat: why yes, I am in favor of it. I really should bake more pies, because strangely enough, I'm really good at making pie crust. [livejournal.com profile] domestinatrix thinks it's because I don't work the crust too much; my enthusiasm and attention span for baking lasts just long enough so that I don't fiddle too much with it.

A last note to leave you with: one of my dad's favorite jokes in my childhood involved the time-honored punchline of "No, Pi are round; cornbread are square".

I love that joke, and think about it almost any time someone refers to cornbread.

1) Real cornbread - the kind made in the south - is also round because it's made in a cast iron skillet, with less sugar and better corn meal than any impostors you might have encountered.

2) π: God's phone number. (I guess that would make e His fax number.)

Ah, the non-sweet cornbread. That's the kind I really like.

Well, it's irrational by virtue of not being rational, yes. But it's more special than that! It's transcendental. It RISES ABOVE ALL OTHER NUMBERS. Except for e. And phi.

An example of an irrational number that is not transcendental is the square root of two. It's one of the "algebraic" numbers: numbers that, while not rational, can be expressed as rational numbers raised to rational powers. (If you'll recall, the square root of two is two to the one-half power, or 1.41 and change.)

getting my geek on

Wikipedia says the rational numbers are a proper subset of algebraic numbers, which makes sense to me. That isn't what I said above.

The sum & product of algebraic numbers is algebraic, but I don't think the same can be said of transcendental numbers: π + (4 - π) = 4.

It's also Einstein's birthday

Making it most amazingly wonderfully MATHICAL!

Which is like magical, but nerdier.

this is the most wonderful piece of information in the history of ever.

math makes me twitch

I once passed a college algebra class by taking it 3 times...

I had to use pi a LOT to make your skirt! I had to figure out the circumference of the lower edge, then use that measurement to make the circumferences of smaller circles that I could then sew together to make a ruffle on the edge of your skirt that would require little to no actual ruffling...AND then I did a separate ruffle that actually did require ruffling which I had to take that circumference and multiply it by some random amount to figure out how many strips and how long to cut the strips

It was all very complicated, I assure you...it should look pretty cool when it's all done...soon, my dear, very sooooon

::is in awe of you::

And that, ladies and gentleman, is why I don't even attempt to draft patterns. Pi! Jommetry!
