I realized I may already have the perfect outfit for the C13 tea party. I need to pull out the various bits and bobs and put them all together to see how it works in reality (as opposed to inside my head, last thing at night), and what sort of mending & alterations I need to do, but I love doing that sort of stuff.

Long ago, I purchased a vintage cocktail dress that was a cupcake pink sheath dress that came with a floofy overskirt that hooked around the waist. The overskirt is a knee-length 3/4 circle of pink fabric that is entirely covered in rows of pale ivory lace ruffles. That have delicate pink embroidery on them. (The ruffles are starting to detach from the skirt in some places, so I foresee a couple of evenings of hand sewing in my future, but that's no big deal.)

So my vague plan for the tea party outfit:

  • Ivory ruffly skirt, worn over a black knee-length skirt and petticoats.

  • Black lacey Victorian-style blouse.

  • Pink and black underbust corset that I bought from [livejournal.com profile] jola

  • Pink & black mini top hat. If I go completely insane, maybe I'll look into making a NEW pink & black mini top hat with bonus ivory details.

Would I want black granny boots with pink lacy stockings with that? Or pink & white stripy tights?

Of course, I still need to figure out when I'm going to have free time to go through all of my clothes and play several rounds of Let's Make A New Outfit. Time to gaze sternly at my calendar again ...

come on, they match EVERYTHING you wear ... and they cost no more than a pair of fancy fluevog boots...

siiiiiiiigh

If they had lower heels, I would be selling off every item I didn't absolutely love or need so I could afford them. But I know damn well that the heels on those boots would lead to pain, whining, and me being able to wear them.

Which makes me HUGELY sad, because otherwise those are The Perfect Boots for me. I covet them so, SO much!

That does sound like a lovely outfit, but corset and petticoats for tea? Tea dresses are all about being light and flowing. Queen Victoria herself wouldn't take tea in a fussy corset rather than a sweet little flowered frock.

Oh, I know. But I'm crazy, and light & flowing tea dresses make me feel uncomfortable, and I'm not about to give up my petticoats.

Yeah, i've been trying to figure out if i even own anything tea-length and softly-colored. I was thinking i'd either go for more of a mourning tea look, because i have no lack of flowy black afternoon dresses, or an English riding habit because tea after the hunt sounds reasonable.

Um...this isn't just any afternoon tea. This is tea with a roomful of fashion hounds, and a fashion show attached. Everyone I know who's doing the tea is going all-out.

So it's going to be a gathering of kids trying to play dress-up Victorian tea with no consideration of what 'Victorian tea' signifies in any reality-based way?

If no one else is going to bother following actual Victorian dressing conventions, i'm happier than ever with my decision to ignore the declared theme in favor of dressing neo-Edwardian all weekend.

Pretty much, yeah. Which, for me, is fine. If I wanted events that were in any way historically accurate, I wouldn't be attending Convergence. The committee can say "Dark Victorian" all they want, but I'm almost certain they've done NO historical research.

Well, it's not a re-enactor's society meeting. :) Themes for Convergence have always been suggestions and flavoring, not iron-clad dictates.

I like the granny boots with pinky lacy stockings...

I say black boots, black tights, with pink lacy stockings *over* the black tights, to make it pink and black lace. :D

Ahhh, I'm so sad I'll be missing Convergence this year, esp considering how close it is and the wonderful theme and events. But I've got a pretty good reason why I can't go, so I'll just wait for the next one I can go to. :)
