Bela Lugosi is Undead Love

And, so this isn't a completely random and content-free post: I wandered around my neighborhood today, mostly just to go for a walk, but partially to check out our local antique mini-mall (Note To Self: you do not need a dollhouse-sized living room furniture set, even if it is upholstered in white & dark red striped fabric. The same goes for the very adorable sparkly, pale pink vintage Christmas ornaments, or the Victorian-era photos or tintypes. Or, sadly, the Edwardian safety goggles, no matter how steampunk-looking they are. You are on a budget, and buying steampunk goggles is not on that budget at all, no matter how reasonably-priced they were.) and to do a little Christmas shopping. I now have reached my traditional state of holiday gift-purchasing: what the HECK do I get my mother? She is impossible to shop for, and the big thing she wanted is not available anywhere.

Other fun things from today: I stopped in at the local beauty academy to double-check when the discount color touch-up day was. Not only did they cheerfully tell me, but about 4 of the students mock-bickered over who would get me as a client that day (including one who said "No, *I* want to work on the hot goth chick!", which cracked me up).

The PAWS adoption center currently has two black male kittens up for adoption. One of them has a white patch on his chest, just like Dread Beastie did. It is far, far too soon for me to even contemplate getting new kittens; I started tearing up just looking at them. But goodness, they were cute.

Aaaaaand, because I haven't posted them in a bit, Return of Shallow Fashion Details!

  • Black leather ankle boots, laced up with pink satin ribbons.

  • Pink and red striped cotton tights (oooh, warm!)

  • Knee-length vintage black taffeta circle skirt that has black grommets up the center, laced with pink satin ribbons, and worn over a knee-length black chiffon crinoline. (The skirt came off of a vintage dress I bought at a thrift store for ridiculously cheap, because the bodice was thrashed. But the entire dress laced up the front through black-enameled grommets.)

  • Pink high-collared, lace-ruffled faux-Victorian blouse, worn with a silver & black locket (by Alchemy Gothic) instead of a brooch.

  • Black wool 'riding jacket' (shawl collar, princess-seamed bodice, 3/4 circle peplum) that I bought years ago from J.Peterman.

  • Hair in low pigtails under my usual top hat.

  • Black velvet scarf and pink & black striped gloves.

  • And the usual makeup: Aromaleigh foundation, pale shimmery eyeshadow, black liquid liner, Vamp lipstick

I have realized that I do not have a pale pink scarf. If I don't somehow get one over the holidays, you'd better believe I'll scour the clearance sales for one. I really like all my various velvet scarves (and I have a fair collection), but I really do need a pink one, to go with my pink gloves. Hey, I don't call them Shallow Fashion Details just for the amusement value!

I found myself looking at kitties on Petfinder last night, and feeling very weird about it. I suspect the acid test will be going and looking at some genuine cats in person, and seeing if I freak out about it.

Speaking of shallow fashion details, could you give me the info for your amazing shoe repair person? I am *determined* to get my favorite boots and favorite pumps (along with the vintage Fluevogs Ladybee sold me) repaired in the next month or.

My shoe repair guy is in Ballard, just off Market. He's next door to Sam's Sushi, across the street from Lombardi's. (No, I don't know the name of the store, because he's always been "the shoe repair guy next to Sam's" to me.) He does brilliant work on vintage Fluevogs.

In case you do decide to go look at kitties in person: the Greenwood PAWS had a pale orange & cream kitten who had a similar face to Jageeda. Of course, that might make you tear up, as seeing the black kittens did to me.

Ah--I am glad to have a referral to that place; it's decently close to me, and I've always wondered.

What antique mall did you haunt today? I want badly to browse for some genuinely old, cool, weird stuff...and there are several difficult people on my shopping list.

I went to Antika (or Antiqua, I don't remember the exact spelling at the moment), which is right on the corner of 85th & Greenwood.

"No, *I* want to work on the hot goth chick!"

See? I'm not the only one who thinks you're a sex bomb (aside from your defusal specialist, of course).

Being referred to as a 'hot goth chick' still perplexes me ever so slightly. Cute, sure. Elegant, yeah, I can pull that off on some days. But hot? It doesn't make sense in my head.

Or, sadly, the Edwardian safety goggles, no matter how steampunk-looking they are.

MMmmmmm. How much were they?

I need a good looking pair of goggles.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

$28. They looked very Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me with Science". Clear glass lenses, with silver-colored wire mesh shields around the sides and top. So very steampunk.

I have been drawn in by Shallow Fashion Details through the magical word "steampunk".

Where would I find these? I need to give them a good home ASAP. Today. I promise to feed them and walk them and let them play with the other Steampunk Garments and Accessories.

They were at Antika, on 85th and Greenwood. Er, in a back corner in one of the rooms, sitting on a white-painted dresser, if memory serves. And yes, Antika is open on Sundays. :-)

Looking at animal companions after a death is really hard.

I originally thought that I was ready when I saw Sting the Siamese - then realized that I wasn't when I broke down crying in a Petco looking at cat supplies. So, I called the adoption lady up and cancelled. Turns out that that was the right decision; I don't think it would have been a good fit in the end.

However, when I read about Ann Koi's cats, I felt like Jesus took a 2x4 to my skull. "Get a cat! You can save one of these cats! DO IT!" It definitely felt like some sort of supreme commandment, and I ignore that at my peril. So, I ended up with Squish. He is a much more compatible cat for me. When I shopped for pet supplies for Squish, I had the time of my life. New toys! New cat!

You're a very spiritual person, you'll know when it's the right time to get another pet. It's a very personal thing. *hugs*

I do think Bela's confirmation name is one of the best names in the world.

Adelbert. How awesome is that?

Looks like there will be enough leftover yarn to make a pink fuzzy scarf. Would that work? It would match the muff.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Oooh. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, and if you have the time. Personally, I think you should not Do Stuff, and relax more, but that's just me. I worry about you.

From: [identity profile] ozitonaranjo.livejournal.com

Scarf is already finished. lol! It isn't super wide but it is VERY fuzzy and warm. The muff was super fast to knit, only took a few bus rides.

--Edwardian safety goggles

And me with many more years of chemistry ahead. I bet they wouldn't let me use a pair like that because of those pesky OSHA rules.

what about building her a kit?

Make the pattern and buy her what she needs to make it (cloth and thread, maybe beads).

I have software that turns images into Cross Stitch patterns. It could be done.

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

The problem is, it was a specific squalling pattern she wanted, that is only available at Walt Disney World, or through a couple specific internet retailers.

Mom = somewhat bonkers. I've mentioned that before, I know.

From: [identity profile] staxxy.livejournal.com

yeah, I know. I remember you saying that. I was just thinking we might be able to make her something that she might like anyway, even if she can't have that one. Alas.

From: [identity profile] orthoepy.livejournal.com

oh, my goodness, that grommet dress/skirt sounds amazing. Now I really want to get a grommet setter. Wouldn't a big circle skirt where the hem was trimmed with grommets and ribbon passed through it be AWESOME?

Hmm, is it too late to tell my MIL I want a grommet setter for Xmas?

I adore your fashion sense <3<3<3

Also the fact that you use "thrashed" to mean "destroyed" . . . I hadn't heard that in ages, and I'm obscurely charmed by it!!

*mwah!*
