I may not be great at sewing things from scratch, but I'm pretty clever at modifying existing garments.

sweeeeet. That looks excellent. I have totally cannibalised otherwise no-longer-useful items to use components of said items in sewing projects. I feel if the item as was is no longer useful to me or anyone else, it's perfectly fine and THRIFTY to do so. :)
