Would you people believe that I had never actually heard anything by Nox Arcana?* I told you, I live in this weird musical bubble.

Anyway, thanks to a random email, I went to their site, and discovered that each release has a sample medley you can listen to. It turns out that Nox Arcana make exactly the sort of spooky, oh-so-gothic, and did I mention GOTHIC, instrumental music I like. Some of it about vampires! Or creepy circuses! I had no idea! I am so gleeful about the instrumental bombast that I am stuck on exclamation points!

I've now put a bunch of their CDs on my wish list on Amazon, so I will occasionally remember to purchase them. Which do I want to get first: Transylvania, Carnival Of Lost Souls, or Shadow Of The Raven? (clicky-links to each release's page.)

* I vaguely remember there was some sort of DRAMA! concerning Nox Arcana, but I didn't find reference to any during my half-hearted googling.

Oooh, I always love good bombast recommendations.

SQUEEE!!! Nox Arcana! I utterly love their stuff, and have loved it from the moment I first heard one of their CDs in The Magic Parlor in Salem, MA. Personal favorites are "Transylvania" and "Necronomicon", followed by "Carnival of Lost Souls", and their two Christmas/Yuletide themed albums.

spoken word / instrumental bombast

I don't even remember where I picked this gem up, but:
Behind the Day - Journey of a Vampire (http://www.amazon.com/Behind-Day-Journey-Vampire/dp/B000QQOWXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1279085456&sr=8-1) by Lee Blaske.

As for where I find new music... I mostly followed record labels, helped by a really excellent record store back in Denver. Labels: 4AD (obviously), then Nettwerk for a while, then Projekt (probably bought something like 75% of their releases in the early 2000s).

Happy listening!

Dark Realms

Please tell me that at least you had gotten copies of "Dark Realms Magazine" when it was coming out? Joseph Vargo was a major part of that too doing the cover art, etc... and it was a superbly done, exceptionally high quality publication.

You can still order some back issues here:
http://www.monolithgraphics.com/darkrealms.html

(The next to last issue, #31 has a feature on my designs which came out quite lovely!)

I don't remember any drama surrounding it all ~ on the contrary, I've been in contact with Christine (J's partner) since 2002, and she's been nothing but incredibly friendly and kind.

Re: Dark Realms

Oh, I do have a bunch of issues of Dark Realms. I thought it was a lovely magazine, and am sad to hear it doesn't exist any more.

I like Nox Arcana, too.

And the drama was actually over Joseph Vargo breaking up with his previous band, Midnight Syndicate, who you might also like if you don't know them. (The drama mostly involved a lot of name-calling on the internet, but the upshot was that the first two MS albums are now unavailable due to all the legal posturing, which is too bad.)

I have all three and my favorite is "Shadow of the Raven". It does have that dark spooky voice intro that I sometimes find irritating when all I want is the atmospheric music, but it is great "storm music".

So over the top super goth, I adore them! I love their "Carol of the Bells", too.

I have "Translyvania", and I heard most of their other albums while working at Spirit Halloween.
Besides a few tracks that are less music and more "spooky background noises", it's a very good CD.

Necronomicon is probably my favorite, but that's because I'm koo-koo for Lovecraft.
