Dear LJ Hivemind, you seem to be my best resource for finding new music. Sooooo, if I were looking for more creepy/atmospheric/eccentric circus-y type bands, who would you recommend?

What the heck do I mean by the above vague description? Stuff like Rasputina, Jill Tracy, Circus Contraption, Power Circus, Toy-Box Trio, and Ego Plum. Does it sound like strange antique music boxes, a bunch of creepy porcelain dolls come to life, or like it would play on the carousel or calliope from Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show? Great! That's what I'm looking for.

Have you heard of unwoman?

She mentioned on twitter that she would be playing a Ustream concert this afternoon...

Hey you! I suggested a ton of great music for you in the last post you made asking for suggestions. ;) <3

Those sound like a good place to start! Pity that Pandora doesn't have a bunch of them.

Deadfly Ensemble, Cinema Strange, Two Ton Boa, Tiger Lillies, Gothic Archies, and if you can find it, there's an old Projekt Records CD called "A Dark Cabaret" which you may also find helpful. :D

From: [identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com

Oooh, I have the "Dark Cabaret" CD. I should dig that out of iTunes and investigate it. I also know I like the Tiger Lillies.

Thank you for the other recs!

They're Japanese! I have no idea what they're singing but I love it.

I'm sure you already know The (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhrGspR0yQo) Tiger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdfPN2N0gCA&feature=related) Lilies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiOL95UitIY&feature=related)?

The Magic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCm26NiGyKM) Whispers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BAj-cP-eqI&feature=related) sound like a music box covered with sugar sprinkles, playing Lounge Music. (Their more carousely stuff doesn't seem to be up on Youtube, though.) I can't listen to a lot of their music in one sitting, but judicious use of their songs in among darker tunes by other people could do the trick.

Diablo Swing Orchestra, specially Balrog Boogie, A Tap Dancer's Dilemma and Vodka Inferno.

From: [identity profile] a-papier-mache.livejournal.com

I second this. Diablo Swing Orchestra are fabulous.

I'd also suggest some tracks off of the Evelyn Evelyn project Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley did.

Not sure how well this will fit, but...

The Pierces describe themselves as "...a fever induced, gypsy dream that you have after drinking too much red wine while listening to a cabaret singer in a southern speakeasy that is run by witches..."

You can find them at http://www.myspace.com/thepierces

Re: Not sure how well this will fit, but...

I've got two songs by The Pierces, and I really like them both. (Plus, the video for "sticks and stones" is so much fun!)

Oh, hey - and I adore the living crap out of Czech singer/performance artist Iva (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BAj-cP-eqI&feature=related) Bittova (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwP_umHgRiE). She sings like Drusilla would, if she were Czech. Or Tori Amos with a violin. imho. ymmv. (Divna Slecinka = Strange Girl in Czech.) I've seen her in concert twice, and both times she had all manner of whacked-out ways of making music, including the incorporation of squeaky dog toys, iirc.

Creature Feature is ace at the spooky type music you mentioned. The Greatest Show Unearthed actually has a carnival theme, and Buried Alive is one of my favorite songs.

More bands you may have already heard

This first suggestion is actually an offshoot band from Skinny Puppy's lead singer. They are officially called Rx though most people call them Ritalin and it's a collaboration between Martin Atkins and Ogre. Their song "Crackhead Waltz" is among the creepiest I've heard. If you're not so down with Skinny Puppy, this shouldn't put you off because this song in particular doesn't sound much like them. Sadly I can't find a version of the song on YouTube.

Helium Vola (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtJDfO7fsEU) has some fun stuff too. This video has all kinds of fun images to go along with their song Omnis Munis Creatura. (I kinda imagine you've already found this one but I figured better safe than sorry.)

If you've never head anything by Tweaker, you really should look them up. That one is Chris Verrena's baby and some of the tracks on the album 2 am Wake Up Call in particular are really good for a surreal dreamy atmosphere. (If you can find it, the soundtrack this guy did for American McGee's Alice would be totally worth finding. He made music with all broken toys.)

Okay so I'm going to be a Canadian nerd now and point you to Blue by The Birthday Massacre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp1FRKc24Zk) which is a little bombast-y but I love it. The video is pretty neat too. (Actually I really like all of their stuff that I've heard.)

I shall forward more if I can think of some.

Forgot one

There is a strange but fantastic band out there called Dog Fashion Disco. Their album Anarchists of Good Taste is an absolute treat of weird. It covers some weird and macabre topics but it's all backed up by this kinda upbeat bouncy sounding music that's both forboding and fun. This is the first song I heard by them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD6DnphpGkE) and I was hooked. It's definitely odd but so worth a listen.

You might enjoy some of Alu (http://alumusic.com/)'s stuff. :)

Hobogoblins. (They stay with Jason Soles when they are in town, IIRC, if that gives you any idea what they are like.)

http://www.hobogoblins.com/

Stuff like dark circus I can probably find through my friends in the Infernal Noise Brigade and Titanium Sproktrastra.

From: [identity profile] elfstar18.livejournal.com

I am not sure if my take on the category is the same as yours (I suspect mine runs more acoustic), but the Luminescent Orchestrii kind of falls into it for me. http://www.lumii.org/music.html

Also, the soundtrack to The City of Lost Children has a really cool song by Marianne Faithful with creepy calliope music all over it.

And, I never miss a chance to pimp The Drowning Lovers, which I hope is understandable given that I've been dating one of the members for 12 years... They're nice and morbid with an old fashioned sensibility. and http://drowninglovers.com/

Beats Antique (http://beatsantique.com/) makes me think of a Turkish klezmer circus hip-hop band.

The Dresden Dolls (http://www.dresdendolls.com/main1.htm) have a 1930s Berlin nightclub by way of punk sound.
