Firstly, I think I've gotten back to everyone with shipping quotes for the goodies from the clothing sale. If you are still waiting on that sort of info from me, PLEASE let me know! Local folks, I am poking at my schedule to figure out good meet-up times, but if you have preferences, tell me.

So, hair color. I have unnaturally black hair, and have had for ... gosh, two decades now. Before that, I had unnaturally burgundy hair. My current hair color of choice is Clairol's demi-permanent soy creme color, which I buy at Sally's Beauty Supply.

But. I always think longingly about doing something DIFFERENT with my hair color. What I really, really want is pink hair. Yes, go on, look surprised. A while ago, the delightful [livejournal.com profile] imflying helped me do a test bleach strand to see if the two decades worth of black dye would lift from the ends of my hair. Ha. No, no it would not. Woe! I also like the idea of extensions, but I would want human hair ones in pink, and oh, the expense involved in that is a bit off-putting.

My latest idle thought is maybe I should let my roots grow out for a while, bleach them, and dye them pink, thus giving myself two-tone hair. But I can't make up my mind about how that would really look, and if it would be horribly, horribly damaging to my hair. (Which I occasionally have worries about with regards to "OHMYGOD is my hair thinning? I can't tell. Iiieeee!") Not to mention that I can almost guarantee that the Stroppy One would be, erm, resistant to my having pink and black hair. But I'm still tempted by the notion ...

maybe switch to semi permanent black for year, and let the hair grow out in a way that will have the color more easily removed? A big huge pain in the ass, I grant. But it will be less damaging to your hair than anything else can think of.

Getting human hair extensions just put in as streaks isn't too ridiculously priced, and I can refer to the person who does mine when I have them. :-D

Yep I used to get pastel streaks put in my hair at Scream for about $60.00.

Though I am basically a dye virgin as I have just recently dyed my hair a burgundy color that faded way to fast! I am part of the pink hair community here on LJ I too dream of having a two tone pink involved hair (pink & blue like cotton candy)and they have a FAQ section http://community.livejournal.com/pinkhair/1634871.html?mode=reply and if your question is not answered in FAQ you can also check out their Pinkhair search engine and/or the community tags.

There's a pink hair community? Brilliant! Thank you for pointing me at this. Off I go to read the FAQ ...

From: [identity profile] girlgoth.livejournal.com

Would you be surprised to know I'm on there too? :) It's a very helpful comm with lots of photos! :D

Also, did you see the reply I posted to yours in my lj? Sorry it took me a little bit, I wanted to look stuff up first and make sure I was giving you the correct info. ;)

As someone who has both bleached her hair and dyed it black, I don't think the bleach would be significantly more damaging than a black hair dye that uses a developer.

The Offspring is naturally blond and is letting a batch of black dye grow out. The results are... odd-looking, to say the least. I suspect that an overlay of pink would improve the effect.

Have you tried color corrector as opposed to straight bleach? Sometimes that lifts more dye, although two decades' worth would probably still be a challenge.

I had black or really dark brown hair for a wile, then I decided to grow out my hair . . . my hair is naturally blond. In my wedding pictures the part of my hair that covered my skull was blond and the bun part of the hair-do was brownish (faded black) . . . it looked good! Though the rest of the time my hair looked strange.

That was over 2 years ago, and I am still finding random strange that are half blond half brown.

Offspring is at the skunk-stripe stage. Classmates have asked, "Why did you only bleach the roots of your hair?" Offspring explained, "I'm blond." I'm sure it'll look better soon.

From: [identity profile] tinkerbell86ca.livejournal.com

Oh it grew it out long ago . . . but it's now kinda mousy and flat.

Since I am so freaking pale, the black hair was to severe for me. I liked it, but everyone else whined so much I got fed up and grew it out.

From: [identity profile] mirandapadgett.livejournal.com

A word of caution: I used to have pink streaks, and they fade ridiculously fast. Like, as in you can see a noticeable difference within two weeks.

Still, Cotton Candy Pink (http://www.manicpanic.com/best%20hair%20color/cottoncandypink.html) is easily the most fun haircolor that I've had.

From: [identity profile] domestinatrix.livejournal.com

Don't do it. Not only will bleaching your roots be horrible for your hair, dying the top pink will be like mutton-dressed-as-lamb-dressed-as-a-ballerina-princess-for-Halloween.

Get some extensions, don't worry about them being human hair. You don't use a curling iron anyway, so extensions will work just like your real hair (don't condition the roots with regular conditioner, it'll dissolve the bonds, but you can get good spray-in stuff made for yaki hair).

If you've had enough of the black, you could switch to less permanent black dye for the next year or so while it grows out to a length you could live with cutting it to, then gradually transition to a different color of dye as the black fades as much as it will.

Because I Dye My Hair Too Much

Having had various silly hair for 15 years myself, I have a bit of experience going from black to Other. I have found that starting with the roots and just dyeing down as the hair grows out looks fine, though I've only used box-dye orange-red, blue, and purple for the experiment.

As to the bleaching, it's really not that bad. Do not listen to what they tell you, if you're only bleaching your natural colour out you really don't need anything more violent than 20-volume developer. (Which will probably still hurt your scalp, but beauty, as they say, is pain.) If you use Special Effects, which is the best silly-coloured dye available, you don't need to bleach fully white to get perfect results. The stuff has great coverage. And might I note, for your convenience, that they sell a shade called Cupcake Pink?

Amusingly, I keep being jealous that I can't stand to let my hair grow out and keep it black anymore. It looks so good, but I just can't do it. The grass, I suppose, is always greener...

Re: Because I Dye My Hair Too Much

Seconded on Special Effects being better than Manic Panic or lesser brands. Particularly noticeable in my beloved purples -- MP Ultra Violet goes silvery grey in a week, but SE Wild Flower stays purple longer and fades more blue.

From: [identity profile] phoenixfire12.livejournal.com

If you choose the right shade of pink it would look great with the black. After all, the colors in your icon look fantastic.

From: [identity profile] tiatsuchi.livejournal.com

I used to have hot pink hair. It was wonderful. :) I'm willing to sell for cheap or give you my hair when it grows out. You're going to have it bleach it yourself, though, it's going to come totally virgin. You'd also have to wait quite a while since I recently shaved off my damaged parts.

From: [identity profile] phoenixtorte.livejournal.com

Would it really cost that much to get extensions or a human hair wig in pink? You could dye it yourself with Manic Panic after all. You can get some cheaper human hair clip in extensions for about $80, and it would last you a while, since human hair lasts longer if taken care of.

Yeah, though, black is seriously the hardest color to get out of hair. Sorry to hear about that. You'll have to let it grow out and then maybe cut it short to get rid of all the color.

From: [identity profile] yume-ninja.livejournal.com

hmm cming from someone who has naturally dark black hair, and currently silver blonde - you would need to strip the color from your hair first and then bleach. it'd be rough though. i bleach, dye, bleach, dye my hair about 4x a year (which is hideously terrible)

if you want a test, you can probably get cheaper temporary clip in pink extensions to mix with your black hair while you let it grow. problem being u'd have to take them in and out, but it would give you time to test the look and also let you grow out your hair w/o damaging it.

From: [identity profile] trystbat.livejournal.com

What color is your hair naturally? That's the big question. If it's naturally dark, the bleaching will be hard. If it's just dyed dark & there's blonde or light brown under there, maybe it won't be so rough...

I have dark-brown-almost-naturally-black hair & once bleached streaks pale enough to dye hot pink (back in college, a billion years ago). The rest was still dyed black & part was shaved off.

Results -- Whoa, damaging! Whoa, it looked hella cool! Whoa, it was freakishly hard to maintain -- pretty much had to keep dyeing my hair every couple of weeks. Lasted less than a semester, then I went to some other, slightly longer-lasting weird color over the brittle bleached streaks.

From: [identity profile] geekmachine.livejournal.com

I say color the new growth pink!

From experience, you can also do two or three rounds of lower strength lightener to get good results without stressing your hair as much as one really strong go 'round would.

From: [identity profile] edelfiore.livejournal.com

Oddly enough, I got the most compliments on my hair color when I was growing out the old black dye. I had spent a bit of time with a black cherry overlay, so by the time it all grew out I had an interesting blonde/red/black candy corn thing going on!

It looked fabulous in braids with all the colors crossing one another.

From: [identity profile] blackrosemortal.livejournal.com

Bleach has always been a process that has scared me. I'm naturally red and have dyed my hair black, darker reds, blues, brown, and purple. I'm getting bored with the red hair again and am presently pondering vibrant red on top and black underneath. What is your natural color? The darker it is, the harder bleaching may be but if you do bleach condition it to try & avoid damage

From: [identity profile] jaborwhalky.livejournal.com

I would love to see you with red hair but thats just me.

What I would suggest is doing thin streaks of pink mixed with the black so people do a triple take as if not certain if the pink is there or if its just there eyes.

My mom has a pink wig she wears for fun sometimes. No, really. Maybe you can find a reasonably priced one to wear around and see if it's something you'd want on a more... permanent basis.

If you don't like it you can hang it off the bed post. :)

Ok here is the deal

I will not spill some of the stuff I know about your hair - but some will "take" differently with the dye - you could just over dye it and some would be dark and some would be lighter - it would look cool.

My hair guy has special stuff that actually COOLS your head when you bleach. However..... You might say goodbye to your long hair. Bleach really kicks hair ass, especially combined with black. One of your problems will be that edge between the dye and the bleach. Oh how I am afraid you may have chunks break off.

I too would say extensions would be the best, at least until you grey out your dye a year or two to get it long enough.

I need to go get my hair bleached and dyed soon in Ballard. Would you like to go with me so you could ask my color expert? Angelo is DA BOMB and would know all if he could look at your hair....

I was musing to my manager about my hair today, knowing it sayid, in big bold letters when I was hired, NO UNNATURAL HAIR COLORS OR FACIAL PIERCINGS!!
I asked her and she said she'd think about it. :]

P.S. I got your book in the mail today. :D

From: [identity profile] ladysinh.livejournal.com

might i give you a suggestion?

my hair was perma-black for about 4 years. originally, i just gradually cut it out inches at a time. then my hairdresser suggested we dye my hair chestnut brown a few times to lighten it. it worked. then we just kept going lighter and lighter. after about a year, i had coppery blond hair, which we were able to bleach platinum.

so it's possible, just takes some time

for immediate results: clip in

On Hair Dye

*de-lurks*

Just wanted to pop in to give my 3 cents about hair dye and whatnot. I currently rotate between cherry red, black, and hot pink. My hair is damaged easily, so I try to avoid bleaching whenever possible. That being said, in my quest for Holy Muffins, Look at That hair color, I've fallen completely in love with L'Oreal Color Rays. It's made specifically for dark hair (mine is medium brown/auburn naturally), and goes on my roots like a dream. There's enough in the package to do a significant amount of hair, and the color is SUPER brilliant. It doesn't cover previously dyed hair very well, but it will change the hue and add a subtle sheen of color, especially in the sun.

From: [identity profile] ghostworld00.livejournal.com

"but I would want human hair ones in pink, and oh, the expense involved in that is a bit off-putting"

Why not price it out at a few salons, then go treat yourself and get a few pink extensions put in? They are not premanent and won't require lifting color/bleaching your hair.

From: [identity profile] cellosong.livejournal.com

My favourite part about just dying the roots is that it would then look as if your hair is naturally pink, and you've been dying it black. :)

From: [identity profile] caughtbyfire.livejournal.com

My advice: never EVER EVER EVER use bleach. ::shudders:: it does bad things... terribly bad things...
I've been dying my hair consistently for the past 6 years, black, red, bluepurpleturquoise, you name it I've probably done it. Even orange (bleach experience).
And I discovered that bleach is just not a good idea for any dark colors, natural or bottle. Instead, I use a stripping agent, also available at Sally's Beauty Supply, in powder form that's mixed with developer. it definitely worked for me, as I went blonde last spring. perhaps worth a try?
