Oof. I like having multi-colored hair, but the upkeep is involved. Last night was bleaching and toning the pink streaks, and then today involved painting everything else in burgundy deposit-only color and letting it sit while I worked. Then the rinsing. So. Much. Rinsing. But all I have left to do is put the pink dye on the bleached streaks, and I'm done for a while!
The nice thing about using deposit-only color (SFX "burgundy wine" mixed with a dollop or so of Splat! "crimson obsession") is that my natural mouse-brown color goes deep pomegranate wine, like my preferred color of lipstick, and my grey and white hairs turn varying shades of fuchsia and rose red. If only it didn't grow out so fast!
Speaking of hair growing out: I need a trim, but my hair is now officially past waist length. Whoo! Yes, I want it longer. I want ridiculous Pre-Raphaelite fantasy hair, dammit. Which is why I occasionally make wistful noises about a perm*, because I want that wavy hair without resorting to sleeping in rag curls.
* I am not getting a perm. No one has to rush to tell me not to. A perm would strip my color, damage my hair and probably make me lose at least 4" in length, and almost certainly melt the bleached streaks. No, I am not getting a perm.

I am now aching to put you in touch with my girlfriend, who's growing hers out to terminal (so am I, technically, but mine is curly enough that I DO lose at least 4" in length dry vs. wet, so it's harder to tell) and has been spending a lot of time on hair-growth messageboards.
(... yes, I IMPRINTED on Rossetti; yes, I lose cohesion a little during the Lucille-with-her-hair-down bits; yes, I am in a mild to moderate state of <3_<3 about my girlfriend growing her hair out. Even if BOTH of us usually end up lying on it if she falls asleep before braiding it.)

Right there with you. I'll just have to content myself with short & sassy low-maintenance ringlets to die for.

and yes i do the funky colors...SFX Virgin Rose. i had that color for several years, then when it was out of stock EVERYWHERE for a few months, i went back to my natural color and said "holy fuck, my hair is that dark??" because the outer layers are more silver than not. (which means not having to bleach...)
then i put the SFX over that when it came back in stock, so interesting ombre effect! i'm a bit older than you are (i'm 52) and a grandmother, and i plan to keep on dying my hair this color. upkeep is a PITA, but i love the way it looks on me. :)

I wish I had more details, but sadly I have to wait until my hair gets much longer before I even think of having waves added to it :)
