The main household computer is Not Well. As in, "Fatal Hard Drive Error" not well.

The Husband doesn't know if we'll be able to save any of the files off of it. All of his email & contacts, all of his scanned-in art & sketches – it all may be lost.

And all the other members of the computer herd back away slowly and stare silently, watching the injured member of the herd and wary lest whatever has brought down this member might infect the others.

Or, in other words, yes, dreadful, horrible, keep it away from my computer.

Poor love.

eep!!

call around. there are people that can at least save the data, if they can not save the harddrive out there.

this is one of those times when it is lovely that he does not do his art entirely digitally.

*hugs* Good luck with this lady. WOW!!! it has been a year for bad computers in your house. :( Maybe you should light a few candles for the computer fairies?

Re: eep!!

To be more specific, call around to computer repair shops authorized to work on that type of computer or hard drive. If they say they can't help, look in the Yellow Pages under "Data Recovery" or something similar.

We're going to whimper at the next-door neighbor (who is a Mac guru) when he gets home tonight.

All I care about is getting the files off the machine. There isn't a lot of my stuff on there that isn't backed up on the laptop, thank goodness. But we need to get The Husband's stuff off the wounded G3.

oh dear!

Yes, as mentioned above- data recovery is a real option. Still, having lost a couple of computers, I feel your pain!

Once you get your data back (or recreate it), remember that backups are your little magnetic friends. So are multiple drives: when the drive with my OS went to the Big Server Farm In The Sky a few weeks ago, I was mighty glad I put all our data on the other drive.

Well, it won't do much good for this problem, but I've got several DAT decks left over from various machine-building efforts, as well as tapes for said. Since the Macs are SCSI (at least the older ones), it should be possible to set one older box up as backup machine, assuming they're networked. The decks are DDS-1, though, so they'll only back up about a gig per tape.
