Minor edits:
At first, when the Lady of the Manners had only read the headline of “‘I’m a human pet’: The Goth teenager who’s whose fiancee walks her around on a dog lead”, the Lady of the Manners thought it was going to be a case of some not-very self-aware Goths being upset that they had perhaps garnered more attention than they had realized they would get.

(Yes, Snarklings. Grabbing someone by their clothes and slamming them backwards is assault, and should not be ignored or brushed off.)

Numbers don't agree here- either 'someone' should be changed or 'their' should. My personal preference here would be the former, because it avoids the awkward his/her or picking one or the other. Damn the English language for its lack of gender-neutral pronouns.

"singular they" (using a third-person pronoun in place of a first-person gendered pronoun as a placeholder for a per son who may be of either gender) is an established construction.

I'm not claiming that wikipedia is authoritative, but this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they) is an interesting starting point:

'Established construction' in spoken English, but I don't think it is accepted written usage. At least it wasn't when I got my degree in English in '88 or during my days as a desk reporter in the mid-90s. It's an ugly, bastardized construct.

We aren’t searching the world for someone to sink our teeth into. We don’t live forever. We don’t have super powers, good looks, arcane knowledge, or great social lives.

Well then, what's the point exactly? ;)

And a resounding YES to bat cameos!

Engaging and lovely! I am afraid to say my husband is from that goth-hating town in Northern England, and I'm not in the least bit surprised that couple ran into trouble. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised.

I whole-heartedly agree with your thoughts on skull merchandise. With my favourite colour being the "hottest colour this season", I'm glad for shopping opportunities, but want to interrogate everyone I see wearing it to find out if they are truly devoted to the colour, or just being trendy.

Should the address to the article also be 'hot'? Not that it isn't easy to cut & paste.

Lovely article again -- thank you!

I spotted a 1" badge at Newbury Comics that read "Skulls are so last year." I was amused.

You might want to check out Sunspot Designs (http://www.apocalypse.org/~hilda/ssdcat.html) for bat cameos -- that's my friend Hilda's enterprise, and I just bought a very cute bats-and-red-beads choker from her, and if she hasn't got bat cameos on the site NOW, she might be able to find such an item in the future!

I have a slight disagreement with your response regarding the couple on the bus. While I certainly agree that they were discriminated against, I don't find it at all appropriate for anyone to engage in non-consensual involvement of the public in their kink. I find it tacky and really quite rude.
