A reader let me know that the Philadelphia Inquirer did a nice article on Goth parents, and quoted Gothic Charm School:

Shallow Fashion Details! Ahh, autumn. I've been waiting for weather like this since about, oh, June.

  • Black leather flat granny boots, laced with black-on-black striped ribbons.

  • Black & pink vertically-striped stockings.

  • Black knee-length ruffly skirt, worn over a pink knee-length petticoat.

  • Black batwing hem high-collared frock coat that closes with 12 large pink taffeta-covered buttons.

  • Pink faux-fur collar tied around the collar of the frock coat, and pinned with a silver filigree skull brooch.

  • Fingerless knit armwarmer/glove things, trimmed with black and white lace so they look like frilly cuffs.

  • Hair pulled back into a high ponytail and secured with lace-festooned hairties.

  • Black antique goggles (on pink velvet ribbon, with tiny pink velvet bows) worn on top of my head.

  • The usual makeup: YSL Touch Elcat, translucent powder, MAC "pink opal" pigment as eyeshadow, black liquid liner, DiorShow mascara, and Chanel "Vamp" lipstick.

  • The usual rings, and small dangly sparkly skull earrings.

Goth parents: accidental warriors against neurosis. In this era of helicopter parents and fundies run amok, we need them.

Asked to comment on growing up with goth parents, Kentukki gestured toward the shadow box on the wall. "Once you have a stuffed bat on the wall and a jar of brains in the cabinet, anything goes," she said with a shrug. She slung a canvas messenger bag over her shoulder and headed out to return her library books.

that made me smile and get sniffly all at the same time

Goth parents are fine. Parents who name their daughter "Kentukki"??? NOT so fine.

It's beautiful to read about parents who set boundaries that are appropriate to their child... in *whatever* subculture. Hallelujah, she rebelled. Hallelujah, she's not too invested in her parent's lives. Hallelujah, they're concerned parents living their own lives too.

And yay that GCS gets more press!!!
