Mmmm, cocktails. Tasty, tasty booze. I used to have a very limited taste in mixed drinks: chocolate martinis, or absinthe, and that was pretty much it. Thanks to the hipster/foodie "artisan cocktails" movement of the past few years, I have tried other drinks and discovered that 1) I really like cocktails with herbal, almost bitter flavors, and 2) not all gin is created equal! I'm never going to order a plain gin and tonic, but good gin mixed with interesting ingredients can create some magical drinks.
Ingredients that will make me go "oooh!" when reading a drink menu:
- St. Germaine or Creme di Violette. I love floral flavors. If there's some sort of rose liqueur in the cocktail, it's pretty much a sure thing for me.
- Fernet. Mmmm, bitter herbal liqueur!
- Absinthe. Hello, I am a goth and I love absinthe. Unless it's Le Torment, which tastes like minty mouthwash, or Hill's, which tastes like gasoline and NyQuil and despair.
- Unusual flavors of bitters.
... huh, I guess I'm mixing myself a drink tonight!
