[profile] minim_cailbre gave me the prompt of cocktails.

Mmmm, cocktails. Tasty, tasty booze. I used to have a very limited taste in mixed drinks: chocolate martinis, or absinthe, and that was pretty much it. Thanks to the hipster/foodie "artisan cocktails" movement of the past few years, I have tried other drinks and discovered that 1) I really like cocktails with herbal, almost bitter flavors, and 2) not all gin is created equal! I'm never going to order a plain gin and tonic, but good gin mixed with interesting ingredients can create some magical drinks.

Ingredients that will make me go "oooh!" when reading a drink menu:

  • St. Germaine or Creme di Violette. I love floral flavors. If there's some sort of rose liqueur in the cocktail, it's pretty much a sure thing for me.

  • Fernet. Mmmm, bitter herbal liqueur!

  • Absinthe. Hello, I am a goth and I love absinthe. Unless it's Le Torment, which tastes like minty mouthwash, or Hill's, which tastes like gasoline and NyQuil and despair.

  • Unusual flavors of bitters.

... huh, I guess I'm mixing myself a drink tonight!

I'm going to need to try some St. Germaine. I've seen it at the store, and keep meaning to look up what it is.

Amen to that. Have you tried Pinckney Bend? That's my current favorite. It mixes beautifully.
