I spent the day today with #1 Minion, wandering around at MedFest. We watched a whole lot of belly dancers, and I felt very pleased with myself because there were lots of times when I thought "hey! I know how to do the move they're using! Not as well as them, but I DO know it!"

MedFest had a vendors' fair. Many many booths filled with shiny things, big flowy ruffly skirts, and cut velvet shawls.

sigh

One vendor had (amongst the traditional belly dance jewelry) a whole bunch of Victorian/Edwardian repro necklaces and earrings. Guess what I bought? grin

And a big flowy skirt (made from fifteen yards of black fabric! swooooosh), some shiny bindis (must have shiny things to stick on face!) and the Gypsy Caravan "tribal basics vol. 1" video. Must ... practice ...

shallow fashion details

  • black hoop skirt

  • pink twist lace dress (w/out the underslip -ooh, daring)

  • black lace jacket / point lace trim

  • black ribbon choker w/ silver bats & bat skulls hanging from it

My hair pulled back in a ponytail & tied with a long black silk scarf, and my usual makeup. The Husband said I looked kinda flamenco-ish. Since it was blazingly sunny, I carted around the black parasol to deflect the orb.

shallow fashion dilemma

I recently acquired a black stretch lace dress - scoop neck, long sleeves, princess seams, and a mid-thigh full skirt. It's by Betsy Johnson. It's a size 12. It fits me.

The dilemma is that I will most likely never wear it on it's own. But for it to look good over other dresses, it needs to be altered. I was thinking of cutting it open down the front, changing the neckline, and turning it into a lace jacket. But the label-recognizing part of my brain starts screaming "it's a betsy johnson dress that fits you! are you mad?"

I paid under $10 for it, so I think I will end up altering. But for now, I'm dithering.

Swoooooosh!

Hey! I know that skirt. Frigga Greenneedle, right? I looked at the skirt in black and purple but could not justify the oof. Wanted it damned badly, though.

You were so brave to go outside in all your layers. We were outside in no layers and still felt like we had been et by a b'ar and shat over a cliff.

Re: Swoooooosh!

remember, my layers are (1) lightweight, (2) mostly lace, so full of holes for air, and (3) over a giant ring that keeps everything away from my legs. That is the trick to gothy summer wear. ;-)

Hey! email me w/ your phone number again - the portable brain ate itself recently, and I lost a buncha info.
