We finished watching Dead Boy Detectives and it was ... cute? And very fanfic-y, if that makes sense. I've never read the actual comic series, and only know of the characters from their issue of Sandman, so I have no idea if the comic series is anything like the TV show.

It is probably a sign of my age that while I found all the teen characters adorable, I would have preferred more screen time for the adults. I was inexplicably charmed by the villainess' campy scenery chewing, but I do love me an over-the-top nemesis.

Last night was the premier of the first episode of season two of Interview with the Vampire, and I spent the entire thing in a state of glee hands. Again, the changes they've made to the story fit the tone of the source material, which makes me SO HAPPY. Also, it looks like they're writing Armand true to character: a subtly petty bitch. Armand, my beloved catty drama queen, yesssssss. Lestat (book and show versions) is my vampire boyfriend, but Armand (book and show versions) is who I would hang out with at the goth club to catch up on all the gossip.

I also enjoyed Dead Boy Detectives, but I likewise have not read the source material. I suspect Neal being an executive producer has a great deal to do with the overall feel and quality of the show. I do find it VERY amusing that they reference Death but she doesn't ever actually show up.

While Banderas brought his own Armand-ness to the movie, he's so completely the opposite of what Armand is supposed to look like that it takes me out of the universe every time. Does the TV show get it right? Or at least more righter?

More righter, yes. Not obviously a young teenager, but much less rugged (for lack of a better word) and more delicate-featured than Banderas. And very pretty.

Honestly, Jilli is totally correct: if you like the book, you will probably like the series, even with the changes they've made. It all works contextually and in the spirit of the book.

It makes perfect sense to describe DBDA as fanfic-y - I said the same thing in my review. If someone filed the serial numbers off a crack!fic to make it original, but actually did it well, DBDA is what you'd end up with.

I wasn't that impressed with the first few eps (I thought the dandelion sprites were particularly silly), but it definitely improved, and ep 7 was an emotional killer. Hopefully it gets renewed and I'll watch more of it, but I'm not getting fannish about it.

I have read the original source material for Dead Boy Detectives and the show was definitely fanficy. Tonally, it's quite different from the DBD source material.
I tried watching Interview With a Vampire, when it first came out, but I just couldn't get into it. I fail to understand anyone's fascination with Lestat, but not everyone likes the same type of cake. :)
