A friend posted the cover of a CD they got in the mail today: The Grunge Years from Sub Pop. This has sent me down a 90s Seattle nostalgia binge. While I have some not-fond memories of that era, a lot of great music came out of it. And as always, I shake my fist at the sky and mutter "Dammit Andy, Mother Love Bone was ready to break big, I wish your habit hadn't taken you out".
For those wondering why a gothy-goth was so entwined with the the grunge scene: Seattle in the 90s was small, sub culturally speaking. If you were in one scene, you knew and hung out with folks in other scenes. Plus I was in college for audio engineering in the music department which meant I knew a LOT of musicians, and most of them were in grunge bands. I saw a lot of the big name bands in the grunge scene before they became big names, usually at shitty dive bars and basement shows.*
All of this to say I'm listening to Mudhoney, Tad, and Mother Love Bone in between meetings today. Maybe I'll toss some Soundgarden in there.
* This is also why I have Very Strong Opinions about Courtney Love. I think Live Through This is a great album. Please never make me interact with her ever again. EVER.

and oof, Tad. There's a band I haven't thought about in aaaaageeeessss.
I periodically go to the subpop site. Did you know you can buy their old titles? I called about one that wasnt on the list and they said I could still get it (an old spoken word cd of Stephen Jesse Berenstein).
There is a part of my heart that will always belong to subpop I think.

EDIT: And while I love Tad, I'm not sure they've ever managed to match, much less exceed, "Stumblin' Man", so I have no idea where they could have gone from there.
