When the Stroppy One is away for an event, I miss him. I miss him a lot. But I also enjoy burning incense, eating whatever I want, and quiet. His internal monologue is often external. I mostly find it kind of endearing, but there are times when I want the house to be quiet except for whatever music I'm listening to.

In other news, I just found out that VampireFreaks runs an annual goth festival/convention. Dark Side of the Con. I am thinking about attending and requesting to be a panelist. But I haven't looked at what VampireFreaks has been up to for ages, so I'd have to research if it would be an appropriate event for me.

Pros:

  • Large goth event in the US! And it's not a first year event, so presumably it runs smoothly.

  • I would cover it/do videos for the planned GCS media empire.

  • I'd ask if there was some sort of signing area that would allow my selling copies of the book.

  • Did I mention visibility for the planned GCS media empire?

Cons:

  • Cost. Yes, it would be tax deductible because I'd be attending for GCS, but still. Cost is a consideration. (The event rate for the hotel is $135/night.)

  • New Jersey. I have a (possibly irrational) dislike of NJ, mostly because my worst-ever boyfriend was from there.

EDITED TO ADD: I just made a VampireFreaks account, because it is the largest subcultural site/forum out there, so I probably should at least lurk there. Much to my hilarity, I've gotten 3 messages in the 20 minutes since I made my account, all from men. Uh-huh. ::insert eyeroll emoji here::

Anyone want to chime in with thoughts?

I work in NJ. It's not a terrible place. Of course, I commute from NYC, which tempers the New Jerseyness of my life somewhat.

UGH. I had this answer written out that was all full of questions and stuff and the web ate it. So, HIGHLIGHTS! instead:

- since this con has been going are there materials, information, and photos available somewhere that you can look at? Maybe lists of pros from previous cons? Perhaps there is at least one person you know well enough from their pool of pros that you can ask about what that con is really like.

- little do the men of that site know just how very not naive or interested in their bullshit you are. <3

You make such a good business case for it I think you need to go. And based on my admittedly long-ago experience of Jersey and its people, it's underrated, or at least large chunks of it are.

Part of my family hails from the Garden State and part of it from NYC. It's not...the worst place...on Earth... :)

Best wishes for the Empire--you've already quite the loyal citizenry!

I think you should look into it a bit more. Talk to previous attendees and guests if you can. You do not want an extra hour in the ball pit! If it checks out, see if they will comp your room - or see if there is a decent less expensive hotel nearby.
