Okay peeps, I am looking for an ivory or cream top hat. NOT white.

A quick browse here: http://www.uniformalwearhouse.com/apages/tuxedoahats.html shows me that the styles I prefer are not available in the color I want (Yes, I'm looking for maybe the Prince Charles Top Hat, the Stubby Carriage Top Hat, or the Victorian Caroler Tall Hats. I am predictable in my tastes.)

Anyway, a top hat that is of an interesting shape, and in ivory. Used or vintage is fine, but I don't want to pay insane prices for it, and (here's the big catch) I need it in under two weeks. Anyone have any leads?

You've probably gotten this one a lot, but have you tried Byrnie Utz on Union between 3rd and 4th?

If this were my quest, I'd buy the white one, and brush-dye or spray-dye it with the appropriate color. But that's definitely tricky to get correct and I can understand if crafting experiments aren't on your agenda right now. I am no help aside from that.

I am, however, very curious to see an outfit from you that requires an ivory hat...

Hmmm. How difficult would brush-dying be? Because I'm perfectly willing to spend an evening doing that.

There will be photos later. I promise. :)

It's basically painting the dye onto the hat with a paintbrush. The hardest part is making sure that the coverage is exactly even, so you don't end up with streaks where you overlapped brush passes, along with being sure the color is what you want. (I haven't done this with a hat, but I've done it with baskets, and the basic process is just that simple.)

It might even be possible to immersion-dye, if you could stuff it to maintain the shape perfectly through the dyeing and drying and get it all in at once (to avoid the dip-dyed look). That's probably about as risky as brush/spray dyeing, just in different ways.

Here's one I made last Summer ~ if all else fails, let me know and perhaps I can let you borrow it.

I know ~ you'll notice I said "borrow", because if I ever let go of it (still haven't had a proper chance to wear it yet), I realize you're first in line! It came out so well, and something I love about it is how easy it would be to wear in the hotter times of year too...

Hello, random friend of the Cupcake's is also drooling over your work. That is STUNNING.

Thank you! I thought it was going to be one I'd be putting up for sale, but I ended up liking it so much that I've kept it for now :)

Argh, "Delivery time is 14-21 days from the date of receipt of your order." If it's on the longer end of that, I'm hosed.

But! Thank you for the clicky-link, and if my search this weekend doesn't turn anything up, I have that as a back-up.

Oh good. I'd been raising my eyebrows at the thought of a black hat with an ivory outfit, plus a new hat always makes any event or outfit feel more eventful.

1. The various dyeing techniques suggested above, with a weak tea solution?

2. Take a white one and give it a medium-ecru lace overlay, for that crossdyed lace look?

Have you checked Gypsy Lady Hats (http://www.etsy.com/shop/GypsyLadyHats)? They have a small number of hats ready-made, and might be able to get you one in time. This one (http://www.etsy.com/listing/54015720/custom-made-jezebel-wedding-top-hat) looks a lot like what you're describing...

I second Byrnie Utz as a possibility: if there's a shop in town that would have anything like what you want on the shelves, that would be the one.

I have a hat from Gypsy Lady, and they do wonderful work. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking to spend that much, and I don't know if she'd get the hat to me in time.

(I have a black-on-black version of the Jezebel, and love it.)

I understand the expense bit of it - I've been wanting a topper and a John Bull, and never able to justify the expense.

The guys in the mall that airbrush everything could paint a white one ivory for you. They should have fabric airbrush paint for t-shirts. Oh..wait maybe Seattle is to classy for airbrush carts. LOL
If they look nervous about it try a sample spray in the interior first.

If you cannot find one of the color you like, you could tea dye a white one and get a lovely ivory or cream color. Wool felt takes it beautifully.

this may sound obvious, but have you tried maybe a bridal shop? or if you find one in the UK,I could possibly forward it on to you, may be quicker than direct shipping. Just a idea anyway :)

From: [identity profile] mimi-monsterr.livejournal.com

I just realised that didn't make any sense- it may be quicker for UK delivery and then a forward, than overseas delivery straight from the company :)

You could see if Carlee could make you one, she has that full sized top hat block now. She needs to order more felt hoods for VMB and I don't see why she couldn't get Ivory as well. Although i'm not sure if it's in your price range or not.

check out equestrian shops online and such, they often have Top hats.
