The breaking news from San Diego Comic Con: Disney announced that they're doing a reboot of Haunted Mansion, directed by Guillermo del Toro.

I ... I am optimistic, with a side of vague apprehension.

EDITED TO ADD FROM TWITTER:

RT @screenrant: Del Toro: Haunted Mansion will be live-action, 3D, and "the most haunted mansion on Earth." Will not be a comedy.

NOT A COMEDY. A creepy movie! Oh, thank goodness. I was always boggled by how Disney did so well with the Pirates of the Caribbean movie(s), and yet went straight to horribly bland and boring for the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie.

EDITED TO ADD AGAIN! From Entertainment Weekly http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/07/22/comic-con-guillermo-del-toro-announces-haunted-mansion-remake-for-disney/

"Unlike the 2003 movie version of Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy, del Toro said the live-action film will not be a comedy (“We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s call,” del Toro said to applause), but instead will be "very scary — if you take the children, they will scream." Del Toro said he has visited the Haunted Mansion ride many times since he was a kid, describing it as “a place where I go when I need to think and to relax."

He will produce and co-write the film and may direct it as well.

Let's hope that this one will be a lot better than the 2003 version.

Guillermo Del Toro! :) :) :)

I'm so glad they're making a creepy version of the movie...I have a lot higher hopes for it this time around.

OoooOOooo.

Can't wait to see what Del Toro does. Pan's Labyrinth was the Feel-Bad movie of the year. :}

Pan's Labyrinth was really odd. All people I know thought it to be something like a fairytale and were shellshocked by the end of the movie. That Franquista theme put over it gave it an extra horror, though a different kind than that of that weird white man-like thing sitting at the table...

Oh THANK Goodness. and I hope its WAY better than that last one.

I don't know if even del Toro could film that successfully. In order to be a Hollywood film it would have to feature tons of CGI monsters that roared about senselessly while smashing buxom ladies to atoms. While I like that idea in other films, In the Mountains of Madness is good for its subtlety, like the haunting whistle in the air and the unidentifiable tracks in the ice.
I wish he could have stayed on with The Hobbit which is action oriented enough to be a successful film.

After seeing what he did between Pan's, Hellboy and the devil's backbone.. I think he could pull it off..

Actually, I totally meant to ask if anyone had read SLG's Haunted Mansion comic? Pretty good stuff from a wide range of talent.

Oh, it's wonderful. I have the first issue. Bought it for a mere 98 cents at Hot Topic. Not in good condition, though.

Yeah, despite the foul-mouthed little man's repeated claims that, if we could see his plans for Mountains of Madness, all Lovecraft fans would "cry until you are out of tears, masturbate in the corner until you are bloody and raw, then start crying again", I have serious doubt he will ever be able to sell his plans to any major studio.

It should be a treat! I wonder how scary though, kids will of course want to see it!

This is because Disney cannot make a good live-action film within their house to save their lives. They haven't been able to do so for 40 years or so. They have to hire talent outside their studios to make their Magic happen.

Heck, even their animation began to suffer until they snarfed Pixar like Gollum and the One Ring. The Precious...

I thought making the Haunted Mansion movie as a comedy was just... wrong. I'm glad they are going to rectify this error.

From: [identity profile] seanb.livejournal.com

There were explicit comments along the lines of "we chose him based on his work on Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone" and "this will be fun and scary but NOT, in any sense of the word, a comedy. We are NOT returning Eddie's calls."

[livejournal.com profile] trilliumgrl has dibs on the signed poster I showed on twitter. If she maintains her existing claim of "though shall not bring home any more wall art from Comic Con", I am assuming you have the right of the next claimant, as the most enthusiastic fan I know of the Haunted Mansion, other than Cory Doctorow.

::flailyhands of GLEEEEE::

If [livejournal.com profile] trilliumgrl is silly enough to stick to her "no more wall art from Comic Con" rule (which I DO understand, especially considering I have a print I picked up there last year that is still waiting to be framed and displayed), I will quite happily give the poster a home. Thank you!

I hope you're having a fun time at SDCC. I wish we could have gone this year.

I hope it will not disappoint. I doubt it promises to be that scary, it is afterall Disney.
