Thanks to a kind friend, I received an advance copy of the new novel Dracula - The Undead. It is being promoted as the "official" sequel to the original novel, and was co-written by a Dracula scholar and a descendant of Bram Stoker.

I finished it last night. I am planning on writing a rather lengthy, spoiler-filled post about it later on today, once my eyes stop rolling so hard that it makes typing difficult.

For the moment, I am going to ignore my huge stack of new books waiting to be read, and instead take comfort in the pages of Anno Dracula by Kim Newman.

I am going to assume the major eyerolling indicates a negative review of said sequel. I wasn't going to read it because I wasn't sure if it was going to be any good and by your reaction, its not worth it.

I have my much read and battered copy of Anno Dracula sitting on my desk.

Why, why, why do people insist on writing sequels to classic novels?

It's one thing to do pastiche or parody, but do we really need sequels to Gone With the Wind, Pride & Prejudice and now apparently Dracula?

And I thought Christopher Tolkien's unending effort to squeeze every drop of publishable (and some unpublishable) scribble out of his father's notebooks was bad enough.

Yes, what we really need is a Dracula parody, Dracula with Accountants. The story of the undead trying to integrate to the Victorian society and being constantly thwarted by inability to understand modern legal practices and technology. Finally hunted down by creditors who accidently cause his destruction while trying to obtain the money they are owed.

And why, why, why does being descended from Bram Stoker make someone uniquely qualified to write the sequel? I mean, my grandfather was a carpenter, and, trust me, you do NOT want me building your tables. Not even if you got the box from IKEA and all I'd have to do is figure out the diagram and use an allen key.

I was giving this as a birthday present (did it get released in england earlier?) and loved it to begin with, but was head-achey & exhausted with it by the end....there was so much...un-necessaryness (is there such a word?) in it! i wonder if Bram is turning in his grave?

I am loathe to admit that I've yet to read 'Anno Dracula', seeing as I'm one of the 'Dracula' dorks who always has a copy on her person; however, I have just ordered a copy, and am excited for it's impending arrival (or not-so-impending, seeing as I'm in London, and there's currently a horrid postal strike).
