Yeah, I know, "thing" is a vague term. Bear with me, I can't think of the proper name for the item I'm seeking.

You know those clips that many people have things like work badges/key cards attached to? One end clips to the card, and there's a cord that can be spooled/stretched out when you need to, oh, wave the badge at something, and then the cord retracts into its little housing? I'm looking for something like that, but small-ish and in silvertone. I have this clever plan to attach a Useful Something to a long necklace, and that sort of sproingy cord clip is exactly what I need to do so. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I know what you are talking about. I don't think I have one around here though. I would try office supply stores, they are most likely to have them. Display and Costume *might*. Or maybe look online for tradeshow oriented stores.

At my work, the piece about the neck is the lanyard. And the retractable bit for the id badge is a "card reel" or "badge reel."

I have an extra one. It's currently blue and says "Radiologic Technologies" but could be painted. It's about an inch in diameter and a quarter of an inch thick (not including the clip).

Looks like you got some good help. Sounds like a fun project!

FYI - most office supply stores around here mostly have the badge reels that clip to pants and such so I think ordering online (like at that link corwynofamber posted) would be your best bet for finding exactly what you want.

And for the necklace/lanyard version - Folk Life has a couple of regular jewelers that do some amazing items along those lines ;>.

Many have already suggested... However, my two-cents. For when I needed on for my Microsoft Badge... Yes... I have one... Mwah-ha-ha... I bought them in a package of two for like $5 at Office Max.
