I'm serious. I've wanted to dress up as the Other Mother for years. I just haven't figured out a good way to do the button eyes.

I might be able to help you out with some ideas for the button eyes. Do you want to be able to wear them, or get a photo with them, or for a costume? Email me at my lj name (at) my lj name (dot) com if you want help. :)

There's a water-soluble spirit-gum esque stuff you could use to stick them on. I don't remember the exact name, but I use it when I need to do gems or other makeup near eyes.

There's only one way to do the button eyes: agree to stay on the other side of the door.

You can buy big old plastic buttons. If you had to wear them for any length of time a clear elastic cord like the cord used for beading would be ideal. It comes in different sizes on a plastic spool. Your hair would hide most of the cord and under club light would be mostly invisible.

Latex around the eyes and custom, blackout contacts with "button holes" printed on them?

I'll have a think on it but it might be possible to do the button eyes with clear elastic, large buttons, and some cleverly placed padding so you can actually open your eyes...

I hadn't heard of this story before, but the trailer came on before the movie Bolt, and when the woman turned around and she had buttons for eyes I nearly peed my pants. That is just plain straight up scary. And when they gave her the box with the buttons and the threaded needle in it I got the heebie jeebies so bad.
I can tell I am gonna love this movie.

Would it be true to the character if you made a modification, and made 'button lenses' in a pair of wire-rimmed glasses?

An acquaintance of mine once wore button eyes, they were very big buttons glued all around to the skin with special skin glue, she could see from the 4 holes in the middle of the button. However I think she had those custom made because they weren't an exact circle, they followed the eye socket shape, and were slightly convex.

Supplies:

A friend that works for an optometrist / spectacles shop that can obtain a pair of 'zero prescription' plastic sunglass lenses OR a pair of knockoff 'oversized Paris Hilton' sunglasses that can be cannibalized for the cause

Two pieces of chamois or felt for padding

a C-clamp and a shop table to clamp it to

A Dremel

A friend with a drill press and 20 spare minutes to drill exaggeratedly large 'button holes' and very two pairs of very small holes in each 'button' lens to attach clear cord or fishing line for 'frames'

Clear cord or fishing line to make 'invisible glasses frames' out of

four 1cm lengths of small heat-shrink tubing, yarn, or black nylon twine and superglue to add "X"-es in the center of each button-lens for the 'sewn-on' look.

I am sitting here in sheer awe of the creativity of your friends (well, excluding me as I have no idea how to make button eyes). It's fabulous.
