Dear local types,

I don't suppose anyone has seen a vintage or antique top hat for sale anywhere? For less than $50?

(Yeah yeah, I know, eBay blahblahblah. I'd like to be able to try the hat on before I purchase it.)

You might want to try Bernie Utz hats on 4th and Union. They'll try to sell you the $120 version, but when we explained that Luke was taking his bowler to the desert, they conjured up a $40 version. :) Nice people, too.

(Granted, it's not vintage or antique - but I'm sure they have similar styles...)

Ah! This reminds me to make a hat-making post... thanks!

Their mad Hatter style is $100. I think that's the cheapest they have for top hats.

Antique Mall in Fremont had some, I think, but I have not been there recently...

It's times like this that I am mad at myself for losing my mother's Victorian-era beaver tophat. I would gladly send it to you.

Of course, she didn't win any Smart Awards for sending it to school with an 8 year old.
