My child is almost thirteen now, but I remember the baby years. Here's my suggestion for the style-conscious new mother: BABY SLING.
Buy, embellish, or make a good baby sling in a color and style that suits you. Black, ruffles, rivets, anything you like, as long as it's reasonably washable.
Then dress the baby in whatever is most suitable for the weather and easily cleaned up.
Ta-da! The baby's clothes are practical and no-fuss, and what the public will see the MOST of is something that matches your style.
Also, if you know how to sew or knit, or have friends similarly inclined, you can make a few special occasion items for the baby that are as gothy as the fabric store can supply.
personally, I think a gothy mom holding a baby dressed in white and lace-trimmed goodies looks charming, and there are LOTS of white baby clothes out there. And they're not even hopelessly impractical, if they're cotton, because you can BLEACH baby blurp out of white.

There are so many crafty people in the community, I'd have bought from her if I'd known.

I spent an hour reading through prior Charm School entries yesterday...your writings and thoughts are totally dead on (no pun intended) with how I've felt about such things. Kudos to you!
