Finishing School of Flail

The names get better and better.

I has to explain Snarkling and GCS to the Niecelet. She ... reacted well. Course she was drinking coffee from a Snarkling mug. Lessons are easier with coffee.

I do understand the wish for/need for a label for oneself, sometimes. For me, it hits especially hard when I'm feeling like I belong nowhere, that I am, in fact, a freak of nature doomed to wander the eternal earth alone. And have actually had people say to me things like, "you wear too much X to be a goth, too much Y to by Z, so who, exactly, are you trying to be?"

I will now and forever cherish what you told me, because it helps me get through periods of doubt like that now. Eccentric does not equal freak does not equal a nation of one. :) But I suspect some of what your young reader was flailing about might've been that, since she'd been told she was a "poseur."

Love your colums. I do refer to them occasionally with the teens. :)

I have been known to respond to comments about how I "____ too much to be a Goth" (with ___ meaning things like "smile" or "wear pink" or "listen to silly 80's pop or hair metal") by smiling and saying "Thankfully, one part of the Goth subculture that I enjoy is that it doesn't require you to be completely one-dimensional."

'ahissy' which I think should be a hissy

I loved the letter about labels. I would point out that sometimes it is great to refuse to be labeled. But it was a letter dear to my heart and I thank you for your wonderful answer.

What I wouldn't have given to have had such a resource as your Gothic Charm School when I was a teen!
