Because I was just thinking about it, and because it's sort of a companion piece to this post in
balzacq's LJ:
There was one charming couple who kept referring to me as "Miss Cupcake", because every outfit I wore over the weekend involved pink. Pink skirts, pink trim, pink ruffles, something. (You're shocked by this, I know.)
On Monday morning, while waiting in the lobby for
stroppy_baggage to return from the parking garage, the nice couple waves at me and says "Hi Miss Cupcake!" And then the boy says "Wait, what's your name? We've been calling you Miss Cupcake all weekend."
"Jilli. I'm also known as Gothic Miss Manners."
The girl stares at me and replies "You're Gothic Miss Manners?! I loved your site!"
I explain about the name change for the site, and give her a Gothic Charm School card. She stares at me for a minute and says "Okay, I mean this as a compliment. I always envisioned Gothic Miss Manners as a much ... larger lady."
I crack up, thank her, and say that I have lost about 35lbs over the past few years. She goes on to say "No, I mean like really tall and bosom-y and ... larger. You're tiny."
So apparently I'm supposed to be taller. And more bosom-y. (God forbid, because I'm pretty damn bosom-y as it is.)

Mental images of notably famous women in our scene often include not only "tall" but also "busty" and "fearsomely corseted". Like, oh, say, Batty, I suppose.

Really makes me want to make dark chocolate cupcakes with pale pink frosting, stabbed through with daggers and/or wearing tophats with veils. :)

I honestly think that's the stereotype behind that mental image. Even though what you write about is mainly (what ought to be) common sense and basic politeness, people can get weirded out by the "formality" of the word "etiquette" and start thinking that it's all about being prim and dried-up and forcing others to follow very complicated, arcane rules.
I think there is also something to the "size of personality" theory. I'm still amazed at how many people tell me I'm "imposing" or "intimidating." I'm 5'3" in my stocking feet, and squishy as hell. Any such views of me are *not* being borne out of my physical presence.
(I wonder how many people are aware that Judith Martin is also a tiny slip of a person?)

*giggles maniacally*
*wonders if you will be posing for a calendar at the cupcake store now*
*giggles wildly*

Taller and more bosom-y cracks me up.

Also, the hell?! You're pretty tall and bosom-y, to my recollection! What was she expecting?

You are tiny yet formidable, yes, that sums it up nicely. You're Death By Chocolate topped with frothy pink-raspberry buttercream frosting, and little dark-chocolate sprinkles in the shape of bats.

I'm also reminded of Escape from New York quotes (I blame it on the Nyquil) "I though you'd be taller..."
Tee hee.

Madonna is as tall as I am! 5'4 1/2".
That has always shocked me.

I should not be allowed a glass of Riesling on a weekday.

I'm amused by the "taller/more bosomy" thing -- I thought you were Just Right compared to my mental picture*, myself!! ;)
-- A :D
*This is helped by the fact that I did meet you at C9, but I couldn't have made a guess at your height from my now-vague memories of the event *grin*
