I've successfully made a dress. A knee-length, full-skirted, princess-seamed dress. Go me!
I used an old favorite dress of mine as a pattern. Yes, I kept a dress far after it was wearable, because I knew it was my One True Dress and I had hopes of handing it to someone to have copies made. So I took one half of it apart (keeping the other half intact for reference), and just used the dress pieces themselves as the pattern.
It worked! It worked! I have a new dress that I made! The only problem I ran into was when I sewed the zipper in backward, and taking the seam ripper to it and sewing it in correctly wasn't too vexing.
Huge thanks to
mineke and
balzacq for giving me some hints on sewing princess seams the other day; they really did help.
Now I just have to work up my courage to attempting to make The Dress in 4-way stretch velvet ...

What are the hints to sewing princess seams? I'm getting closer to sewing for myself again, and would love to know from those who've done. :)

I do however have a very old wool cashmere coat (with Best's Apparel on the inside tag) that I love to pieces and am preparing to alter it to a more wearable status. Right now it needs new lining, strengthened seams, taken in at the waist (I got it from our vintage costume room sale in high school and it fit me then, but I'm smaller now), and dyed a darker color than the current pea soup green. ;) I have the correct acid dyes, and it's waiting for me to take the lining out and start the tailoring...probably much the same way your One True Dress was. I spent many years looking for a replacement, and finally it's time to go ahead and just *do it*. *gulp* Wish me luck. Your project has renewed my spirits though because I know how apprehensive you were about it. ;)
Congrats again! I hope there will be pictures soon! :D

By the way, my NYE outfit? The red stretch velvet with the black trim. It's too fabulous not to.

My One True Dress was a black ankle-length Betsey Johnson princess-seamed cotton/lycra dress. I wore it for years; wore it right into the ground. :D

BTW, my Lip Ink order arrived today. The free color they sent me ("Nude") is in fact my perfect non-color by itself, and makes a lovely day-red under "Cherry." I ordered a sample tube of Rosewood that turned out to be too pink for me if you want it.

Now just imagine (and I'm sure you do) all the fabrics you could make this dress from...
Happy continued sewing!
