I've successfully made a dress. A knee-length, full-skirted, princess-seamed dress. Go me!

I used an old favorite dress of mine as a pattern. Yes, I kept a dress far after it was wearable, because I knew it was my One True Dress and I had hopes of handing it to someone to have copies made. So I took one half of it apart (keeping the other half intact for reference), and just used the dress pieces themselves as the pattern.

It worked! It worked! I have a new dress that I made! The only problem I ran into was when I sewed the zipper in backward, and taking the seam ripper to it and sewing it in correctly wasn't too vexing.

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mineke and [livejournal.com profile] balzacq for giving me some hints on sewing princess seams the other day; they really did help.

Now I just have to work up my courage to attempting to make The Dress in 4-way stretch velvet ...

WHOO!!! I remember the feeling of making something like that the first time--it's WONDERFUL.

What are the hints to sewing princess seams? I'm getting closer to sewing for myself again, and would love to know from those who've done. :)

It was essentially: pin the front/side seam at the armhole (and a couple inches in) and pin at the point just before the seam starts curving. Then pin together the halfway points, the quarter points, the eighth points, etc., until it's fully pinned (pins 1/2 to 3/4 inches apart).

Keen. That's a good technique for that, thanks for sharing!

Fantastic! I know this has been a goal for a long time now. Yay!

Ooh! Congrats! You're one ahead of me. ;) I have fabric, but can't seem to bring myself to make a dress for myself. It's still too scary. So I keep making my favorite styles for new monsters. ;)

I do however have a very old wool cashmere coat (with Best's Apparel on the inside tag) that I love to pieces and am preparing to alter it to a more wearable status. Right now it needs new lining, strengthened seams, taken in at the waist (I got it from our vintage costume room sale in high school and it fit me then, but I'm smaller now), and dyed a darker color than the current pea soup green. ;) I have the correct acid dyes, and it's waiting for me to take the lining out and start the tailoring...probably much the same way your One True Dress was. I spent many years looking for a replacement, and finally it's time to go ahead and just *do it*. *gulp* Wish me luck. Your project has renewed my spirits though because I know how apprehensive you were about it. ;)

Congrats again! I hope there will be pictures soon! :D

Is the four-way stretch velvet perchance the pink stretch velvet you were planning to send out my way?

Just curious. :)

Heh. Nope! The pink stretch velvet is still going to be sent off to you, as padding for the parasols. (Of which I still haven't found good fabric for one, hmmph.)

*smooch*

Congratulations! I must see you in this dress, preferrably in person.

By the way, my NYE outfit? The red stretch velvet with the black trim. It's too fabulous not to.

Oh yesssss. You know I love that dress - that's why I harangued you to get it. Go! Be fabulous! The peasants will never know what hit 'em.

Congratulations!

My One True Dress was a black ankle-length Betsey Johnson princess-seamed cotton/lycra dress. I wore it for years; wore it right into the ground. :D

OMG weeeeeee! This is so completely full of awesome.

BTW, my Lip Ink order arrived today. The free color they sent me ("Nude") is in fact my perfect non-color by itself, and makes a lovely day-red under "Cherry." I ordered a sample tube of Rosewood that turned out to be too pink for me if you want it.

that's fabulous!

Now just imagine (and I'm sure you do) all the fabrics you could make this dress from...

Happy continued sewing!
