I watched episode 1 of AMC's Interview with the Vampire last night, and I am DELIGHTED. Is it faithful to the text of the book? No. Is it faithful to the tone and spirit of the book? YES.
There are definitely plot changes, and so far, all of them are for the better. And the show has brought in some minor plot elements from the book that weren't in the movie, which made me happy. The show absolutely nailed Rice's lurid purple prose air, which was one of the things I was worried about.
I still have some aesthetic quibbles about the actor playing Lestat, but those lessened as the episode went on because of how he inhabits the role so completely. Apparently he's a fan of the books and Lestat was his big dream role, so I'm happy for him.
The queer subtext of the book? WOW NOT SUBTEXT IN THE SHOW, and it lives up to that TV: MA rating. Damn, does it ever.
I spent the episode in a state of flaily-handed joy, and am looking forward to the next episode. MY ORIGINAL MURDER HUSBANDS OTP! :: hearteyes ::
