I posted a photo of my current dual armloads of bracelets (armor!) with my usual hashtag of #StereotypeTechnology. One of the fandom folks I chatter with asked a question, which kicked off this back-and-forth:
A Sentient Hive: just curious, what do you mean by "stereotype technology"?
Me: It's how I refer to the jewelry many Goth Girls of a Certain Age collected and wore AND REFUSE TO GIVE UP. My array of silver ankh pendants is stunning - literally, because I could do some serious damage if I used them as weapons.
Me: Was it an item of sterling silver jewelry you could buy in tiny import shops in the early 90s? Would your layers of it get tangled in the lace or hair of another goth on the dance floor? It's stereotype technology.
A Sentient Hive: ah, super interesting! as in the stereotype itself is automated? the jewelry as a technological conduit of the stereotype?
Me: What a great question! A little of both, I feel, but more the jewelry as a technological conduit of the stereotype. Visual subcultural markers.
---
I love love love the concept of "technological conduit of the stereotype". That's such a great way to put it.
